Box Score

CANTON, N.Y. -- Stevenson men's hockey slotted home three goals in the third period en route to a 4-1 victory against SUNY Canton on Saturday.

Stevenson (1-0-1) received its goals from four different scorers, while Ryan Kenny racked up 25 saves as the Mustangs held SUNY Canton (0-1-1) off the scoresheet for the first two periods.

  • Both defenses clamped down in the opening period as neither side could light the lamp.
  • Kenny collected six saves for the Mustangs as Stevenson was able to kill off multiple penalties.
  • Stevenson registered quality looks on their power play chance at 7:41 in the frame, which included a 5-on-3. Off a faceoff win for Alex Rivet, the Mustangs ripped chances from Rivet, Mac Lowry and Ryan Patrick

  • Rivet smacked home the opening goal of the night just over three minutes into the period, finishing off the goal with assists to Brendan Rylott and Austin Master. Coming out from the near corner, Stevenson continued the cycle before Rivet buried the centering pass in front from close range.
  • Stevenson put its penalty kill to work once again following a cross-check five minutes into the period. Kenny made two saves as the Mustang defense insulated the junior netminder.

  • SUNY Canton tied the contest at one just 43 seconds into the third period on a tally from Matthew Headland.
  • Stevenson roared back with three goals in a five-minute span to jump ahead for good. Kyle Lightfoot got the scoring started with a go-ahead finish following a strong forecheck for a 2-1 lead with assists for Rivet and Rylott.
  • Just over a minute later, Stevenson raced in off a dump and chase, gaining possession as Liam McCanney finished in front.
  • Off the rush, Luke Benitez slid over a slick pass to Chad Watt, who snapped home an easy 2-on-1 goal from the right circle for a 4-1 advantage.

  • In total, four Mustangs (Rivet, Malcom Palmer, Lightfoot and McCanney) registered their first collegiate goals over the opening weekend of the season.
  • Stevenson posted five goals in the third period this weekend.
  • Anthony Starzi and Graeme McCrory finished the weekend with a team-best +3 rating.
  • With 58 saves in two games, Kenny sits at 978 career saves for the Mustangs.
  • The Mustangs penalty kill was perfect on Saturday, killing off all eight SUNY Canton power play opportunities.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs are back on the ice, opening UCHC play at Chatham on Saturday, November 6 at 4:00 PM.
  • SUNY Canton: The Roos host Castleton on Saturday, November 6 at 7:00 PM.
