Mustangs Outlast Marymount and Lynchburg

OWINGS MILLS, Md.- Stevenson women's volleyball opened the day with a 3-1 win over Marymount (Va.) and then closed the day with a 3-2 win over Lynchburg, Saturday in Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • After dropping the first set, 25-22 against Marymount (Va.), the Mustangs swept the backend of the match to win, 3-1. 
  • In the second set, the Mustangs and the Saints fought in a back and forth until Stevenson took control as they racked up four consecutive points, making it, 20-17. A kill by Sophia Eckerd and by Piper Connors, along with a Saints attack error and a Mustang service ace put Stevenson in the lead. 
  • Marymount couldn't catch up as Stevenson took the final five of eight points. 
  • Set three saw Stevenson force five straight points to lead, 7-3. 
  • The Mustangs kept it rolling following a kill by Darian Dildy, Eckerd, and Connors to go up, 14-9. 
  • Marymount managed to get within five but couldn't close the gap as Stevenson took set three, 25-17. 
  • The final set was a little back and forth for the two teams until the Mustangs added five points in a row as they led, 19-10. 
  • The Mustangs tacked on their final three points of the match following a Saints attack error, a service ace by Kanaan Gemmil, and a kill by Dildy. 

  • With the first set close, the Mustangs began to break away tallying five straight points, to take the 16-13 lead. 
  • Stevenson came out on top in the first set against Lynchburg as they won, 25-18. 
  • The Mustangs closed out the first set once again getting three straight points. A kill by Eckerd and Connors and ending with a service ace put them out on top. 
  • The second set started with both teams trading points as Lynchburg took a 7-5 lead. 
  • Stevenson started to gain momentum as they added five consecutive points to take the lead at 21-14 but the Hornets fought back and won set two, 26-24. 
  • The Hornets jumped out in front first in set three as they led, 5-1. 
  • In the middle of the third set, the Mustangs started to bounce back putting up four points in a row following a kill by Dildy. Stevenson led, 19-16. 
  • The two teams went back and forth a little bit until Stevenson grabbed the final three points of the set to win, 25-21. 
  • Set four saw a slow start for the Mustangs as they traded points. The Hornets put up five straight points which in the end sealed their, 25-17 set four win over the Mustangs. 
  • The final set of the day, the Mustangs were in control. A kill by Haley Hoover and a service ace from Taylor Jones sealed the Mustangs win, 15-8. 

  • Connors and Eckerd put up an impressive 25 kills on the day. 
  • Mackenzie Blevins tallied 45 assists totaled across the two matches and racked up a season-high 27 assists against Lynchburg. 
  • Eckerd posted a .169 hitting percentage and led the team with 11 block assists. 
  • Kayla Vaeth totaled 44 digs and four service aces between the two matches. 

  • The Mustangs travel to Messiah, Wednesday, October 6th at 7:00 PM for a MAC Commonwealth match-up.
