Mustangs Fall to No. 5 Elmira in UCHC Semifinals

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey freshman Karly Aguirre netted a power play goal but fifth-ranked Elmira remained perfect on home ice with a 4-1 victory in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) semifinal victory Saturday afternoon at Murray Athletic Center.

  • The Soaring Eagles (21-4-2) recorded the game's first five shots on net of the contest with senior Annie Smyth-Hammond stopping all of them.
  • Senior Allyson Barlow put the Mustangs (12-9-5) first shot on net just past the midway point of the period.
  • At the 10:30 mark, Elmira got on the board after Claire Meeder was able to poke the puck past Smyth-Hammond on her own rebound close in front.
  • The hosts kept the offensive pressure, outshooting Stevenson, 5-0, the rest of the period.

  • Barlow had an early shot, firing a shot on net in the opening minute before Smyth-Hammond made three straight saves.
  • The Mustangs were whistled for the first penalty of the game at the 4:29 mark but Smyth-Hammond made three saves on the penalty kill.
  • Stevenson went on its first power play at the 9:35 mark but it lasted just 37 seconds before sophomore Nikki Kendrick was called for her second penalty.
  • Just six seconds into four-on-four play, Amanda Zenstein fired a shot from the point off a face-off win by Emma Crocker.
  • The Soaring Eagles pushed their lead to 3-0 just 52 seconds as Crocker scored with both team's still in the penalty box.
  • The Mustangs went back on the power play at the 13:26 mark and had a five-on-three for 35 seconds.
  • After not recording a shot during the two-player advantage, Aguirre got the visitors on the board scoring on a rebound in front. Barlow and senior Jordan Pirrello dished out the assists.
  • With 1:54 remaining in the period, Stevenson went on its fourth power play of the game and fired four shots on netbefore Elmira sent a second player to the box with 0.6 seconds remaining.
  • After recording just one shot in the first period, the Mustangs outshot Elmira, 16-14, in the middle frame.

  • The Mustangs started the period with a five-on-three for six seconds before having 1:54 on their sixth power play attempt.
  • Stevenson recoded three shots on the power play, including two by Kendrick but all three were saved by Elizabeth Hanson.
  • The visitors had its third five-on-three opportunity, this time for 1:53, but recording just two shots on net.
  • Elmira scored a fourth goal with 1:46 remaining, scoring on an empty net.

  • Elmira outshot Stevenson, 29-26, with the Mustangs outshoting the Soaring Eagles, 25-17, over the final two periods.
  • The Mustangs went 1-for-7 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
  • Elmira improves to 9-0-0 all-time versus Stevenson while the Mustangs have been held to just one or fewer goals in all nine meetings.
  • Aguirre finishes the season with a point in seven straight games and recorded 20 points over the final 12 games.
  • Smyth-Hammond recorded 25 saves and finishes her career ranked third, just 10 saves shy of second place.
  • Sophomore Tea Ferrara totaled a team-high 12 face-off wins.
  • The senior class of Barlow, Pirrello, Smyth-Hammond, Rachel Grewette and Carly McGee led the Mustangs to a pair of UCHC Final Fours, including the championship in 2018.
