Box Score ASTON, Pa. - The Stevensone women's ice hockey team erased a one-goal deficit with goals from sophomore Nikki Kendrick and junior Trinity Barcless as the Mustangs downed Neumann, 2-1, in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at IceWorks.
- The Knights (12-13-1) controlled the early offense but were the first to be sent to the box after a slashing penalty at the 4:14 mark of the opening period.
- Kendrick and senior Allyson Barlow each fired a shot on net during the power play but Helen Cooney kept both shots in front.
- Just 35 seconds after their first power play expired, the Mustangs (12-8-5) went back on the player advantage but were only able to get one shot to the net.
- Neumann recorded five of the next six shots on net with senior Annie Smyth-Hammond making five straight saves for the visitors.
- The hosts went on its first power play of the contest at the 16:24 mark and needed just 58 seconds before Georgia Wunder gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.
- Stevenson went back on the power play with 45 seconds remaining in the opening frame with Neumann recording a shorthanded shot before intermission.
- After failing to convert on the power play, Kendrick scored an even strength goal to tie the game just 2:10 into the period.
- Kendrick's linemates and sophomore Tea Ferrara and Ally Gibson recorded the assists.
- The team's traded the offensive momemtum before the Knights earned a power play with 3:44 remaining after an interference penalty.
- Both Ferrara and sophomore Breanna Crosson recorded a blocked shot on the penalty kill before Smyth-Hammond made a save with three seconds left in the player advantage.
- The Mustangs recorded the final three shots on net to end the period, including a pair of late shots by sophomore Elizabeth Gaudreau and Barlow.
- Stevenson carried the momentum in the final period right from the start firing three shots on net before going back on the power play.
- Cooney stopped all five shots on the penalty kill for the Knights but Barcless scored on her on rebound right as the penalty expired.
- Freshman Karly Aguirre picked up the primary assist after firing a shot on net while senior Jordan Pirrello got credit for the secondary assist.
- Neumann had a power play opportunity with seven minutes remaining but the only shot attempt was blocked by Barcless.
- Cooney was pulled for an extra skater with 1:40 left in regulation but all four shots by the Knights were wide of the net.
- Stevenson outshot Neumann, 47-18, including, 18-2, in the final period.
- With the win, the Mustangs advance to their second UCHC semifinal in three seasons in the league.
- The Mustangs went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Knights finished 1-for-3.
- Smyth-Hammond stopped 17 of 18 shots for her third straight win in net.
- With an assist, Aguirre pushes her point streak to six games and now has 18 points in her last 11 games.
- Meanwhile, Kendrick has a point in nine of her last 10 games while Pirrello has a point in eight of her last 10 games.
- Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, March 7 when the Mustangs compete in the UCHC semifinals at the highest remaining seed.
