Mustangs Drop First UCHC Semifinal Series Game Versus Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Second-seeded Wilkes scored four straight goals in the third period to erase a one-goal deficit as the Colonels downed the third-seeded Stevenson men's ice hockey team, 7-5, in the first of a two-game United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) semifinals series Friday evening at Toyota Sportsplex.

  • The Mustangs (17-8-2) carried the early offense, firing seven of the first eight shots on net, including an early score by freshman Chris Lee just 4:44 into the contest.
  • After a forecheck by senior Colin Woods to win possession back in the offensive zone, junior Aaron Murray kept the puck in at the blue line. Lee shot the puck from the slot before skating in to tap in his rebound after commotion in front of the net.
  • At the 6:45 mark, Stevenson went on the game's first power play but it was the Colonels (19-7-0) who had a the lone shorthanded shot.
  • With 7:30 left in the period, both team's went to the box to produce four-on-four play. Both team's recorded a shot during the two minutes.
  • Right off an offensive zone face-off win, Wilkes tied the game at, 1-1, with 2:02 remaining in the period as Joey Pasquini won the puck back to Danny Reidel for the wrister.
  • The Mustangs went on their second power play with 33 seconds left, firing one shot on net before intermission.

  • With 1:27 left on the power play, freshman Austin Master regained the Mustangs lead just 48 seconds into the second frame.
  • Senior Nick Gray centered a pass to sophomore Luke Benitez in front who saw his shot blocked before Master buried the rebound.
  • The team's combined for three goals in a 1:20 span, as the Colonels once again tied the game off a face-off draw.
  • Senior Christian Ripley responded for the visitors, giving Stevenson a, 3-2 lead, on assist from linemates, senior Dominic Brenza and junior Carl Lyden.
  • Just 36 seconds later, Wilkes tied the game for the third time, scoring on a rebound attempt in front.
  • With 1:35 remaining, Lee netted his second of the night to once again reclaim the lead for the Mustangs scoring on a wrap-around. Senior Bruce Stachitas kept the puck in at the blue line while Woods picked up his second assist of the night.

  • Wilkes tied the game at the 7:39 mark before the hosts took its first lead just 54 seconds later.
  • The Colonels went on the power play at the midway point of the period and needed just 1:07 before taking a two-goal lead.
  • At the 13:16 mark, the Mustangs went on the power play but only recorded one shot on net.
  • Stevenson pulled goaltender Ryan Kenny with 3:10 remaining and Wilkes capitalized, scoring with 1:57 left.
  • Woods found the back of the net with 1:34 remaining in the contest on an assist from senior Evan Williams.

  • Wilkes outshot Stevenson, 40-34, including 16-11 in the final period.
  • The Mustangs went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Colonels scored on their lone opportunity.
  • Stevenson had its first lead against Wilkes this season but falls to 0-3-0 versus the Colonels this season.
  • It is the second multi-goal game of the season for Lee while Woods finished with a career-high three points.

  • Stevenson and Wilkes will compete in the second semifinal contest of the series on Saturday, February 29 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs must win tomorrow to keep their season alive and to force the mini-game.
