Miller Nets First Career Goal in Mustangs 3-0 Victory at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Stevenson women's ice hockey team finished the regular season unbeaten in its final five games as the Mustangs went undefeated in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) after posting a 3-0 victory over Wilkes Saturday afternoon at Toyota Sportsplex.

  • Wilkes (5-17-1) recorded the first shot of the game before the Mustangs (11-8-5) responded with the next five, including three straight shots by senior Carly McGee.
  • The hosts earned the first power play of the contest as Stevenson was whistled for its first penalty at the 14:26 mark.
  • The Mustangs recorded two shorthanded shots before senior Annie Smyth-Hammond stopped the lone shot on the penalty kill.
  • With 1:30 left in the period, Stevenson went on its first power play attempt but saw three of its shots blocked while Alexa Rango made a late save.

  • The Colonels had three of the first four shots of the second period and went on their second power play at the 4:13 mark.
  • Just 53 seconds into the power play, Wilkes was whistled for the penalty, making it four-on-four for 1:07.
  • At the 9:40 mark, freshman KaliJo Zagula gave the Mustangs the lead on assists from classmate Karly Aguirre and sophomore Paige Sullivan.

  • Sophomore Kendall Miller netted her first career goal at the 6:14 mark of the period on a helper from Zagula.
  • Just 37 seconds after the goal, the Mustangs went on the power play, firing two shots on net.
  • Freshman Ashlyn Bray pushed the visitors lead to, 3-0, on an even strength goal. Aguirre and Sullivan once again dished out of the assists.

  • Stevenson outshot Wilkes, 41-14, holding the hosts to just three shots in the opening period.
  • Smyth-Hammond posted her fourth shutout of the season and second consecutive, finishing with 14 saves.
  • Aguirre pushed her point streak to five and has two points in each of her last four games.
  • It is the second career multi-point and multi-assist game for Sullivan.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 29 when the Mustangs travel to Neumann for a UCHC quarterfinal contest. Time is TBA.
