Mustangs Shutout Chatham for Program Win No. 100

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Annie Smyth-Hammond posted her third shutout of the season as the Mustangs downed Chatham, 5-0, en route to program win number 100, Sunday afternoon at Pittsburgh Ice Arena.

  • It was the hosts who recorded the first two shots on net, including a shot by Sydney Collins, who shortly after fired a shot off the pipe.
  • The Mustangs (7-5-3, 9-8-5 UCHC) responded with four consecutive shots before earning the first power play of the contest at the 13:32 mark.
  • Four different players recorded a shot on net during the player advantage for Stevenson while the Cougars defense blocked an additional two shots.
  • Just 13 seconds after the power play expired, junior Trinity Barcless got the visitors on the board on an assist from senior Jordan Pirrello.
  • The Mustangs went on the penalty kill for the first time with 2:08 remaining in the period, but were successful on the kill and even recorded a shorthanded shot on net.

  • The second period started much like the first, with Chatham (8-12-2, 4-8-2 UCHC) getting shots on net early.
  • After the hosts fired six of the first nine shots on net of the period, junior Kira Collins found the back of the net to push Stevenson lead to, 2-0, at the 11:32 mark.
  • Just 1:38 later, sophomore Nikki Kendrick got in on the scoring action, getting a helper from sophomore Paige Sullivan.
  • With 29 seconds remaining in the period, freshman Karly Aguirre gave the Mustangs a, 4-0, lead heading into intermission. Classmate Ashlyn Bray picked up the assist.

  • The Mustangs had an early power play attempt in the final frame but Devon Strachan made a pair of saves for the hosts.
  • On the Cougars second power play of the game, both teams once again recorded a shot, with Barcless recording the shorthanded shot.
  • With 1:54 remaining in regulation, Barcless netting her second goal of the game on assists from Aguirre and junior Casey Storck.

  • The win was number 100 for the Mustangs who are in their eighth season. Both head coach Tori Emoff and assistant coach Megan Alexander also guided the team to program number one as players.
  • Stevenson outshot Chatham, 45-19, including 14-4 in the opening period.
  • Both team's finished 0-for-2 on the power play.
  • It is the second multi-goal game of the season for Barcless whie Aguirre recorded her second straight multi-point game.
  • With a goal, Kendrick extended her point streak to seven games. Her 27 career goals ranks tied for fifth all-time in program history.
  • Smyth-Hammond stopped all 19 shots she faced.

  • Stevenson returns to actin on Friday, February 21 when the Mustangs travel to Alvernia for a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
