Messiah Pulls Out See-Saw Battle Late

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Visiting Messiah connected on 60% of its three-point attempts and pulled away in a see-saw battle late, downing Stevenson 82-76 in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Stevenson (6-16, 3-10) jumped out to an 11-5 lead 3:35 into the game following a basket by Mark Terrell.
  • Messiah (10-13, 3-11) cut the lead to two three times, including 22-20 at the 11:26 mark on a three by Colin Sareyka.
  • The Falcons took their first lead, 32-31, with 4:43 left before halftime.
  • The lead was short-lived, as a Terrell basket 12 seconds later put the Mustangs back in front.
  • Stevenson led 39-36 with 1:52 on the clock following a basket by Norman Hughes.
  • EJ Porter tied the game 39-39 with a three with just under a minute remaining.
  • A Hughes free throw with 15 seconds left put the hosts up 40-39 at the break.

  • Back-to-back Hughes threes, followed by a basket by Jaylin Johnson, capped a 13-3 run to open the second half as Stevenson led 53-43 with 16:19 left.
  • Messiah reeled off 11 unanswered points to take a 54-53 lead on two Sareyka free throws at the 13:15 mark.
  • A three by Hughes at 12:28 put the Mustangs back in front.
  • The Falcons built a 64-60 advantage with 9:18 to play.

  • The visitors took the lead for good on a Porter triple with just under a minute to go.
  • Stevenson came up empty on its next possession, and Messiah went 4-4 at the line the rest of the way to seal the win.

  • Messiah finished 15-25 behind the arc and at 45.2% from the floor, while Stevenson shot 40.6% and was 8-29 from long range.
  • The hosts held a 44-34 rebound advantage, including 13-5 on the offensive glass.
  • Hughes led Stevenson with 21points and five rebounds.
  • Terrell posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, going 6-12 from the floor and 7-8 at the free throw line.
  • Johnson added 11 points, five boards and six assists.
  • Koskovich had a career-high seven points and also had four rebounds and three assists.
  • Hughes, who entered the game eighth nationally in free throw percentage, had his consecutive made free throw streak stopped at 32 late in the first half.
  • The game saw eight ties and 11 lead changes.

  • Stevenson is back in action Saturday, traveling to Lebanon Valley for a 2 pm MAC Commonwealth contest.
