Women's Basketball Pulls Away From Alvernia in First Conference Win of the Season

READING, Pa. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team traveled to Alvernia University on Wednesday night for a MAC Commonwealth match-up. The Mustangs collected their first conference win of the 2019-20 season by cruising past the Golden Wolves 76-53. 

  • Stevenson (5-8, 1-4 MAC Commonwealth) started the game off with a Brandi Hall basket at the 9:40 mark.
  • At the 8:11 mark, Hannah Crist converted a layup to make the score 4-0.
  • A Hall jumper at the 7:17 mark caps the Mustangs 6-0 run when 44 seconds later two Gabriella De Vito free throws put Alvernia (6-7, 2-3 MAC Commonwealth) on the board.
  • The Golden Wolves posted two threes from Abbie Zerbe and Nasheyla-Poindexter at the 3:06 and 2:30 mark, respectively.
  • The Golden Wolves shrunk the lead by one with a Cathryn Kramer layup at the 1:46 mark.
  • At the 1:08 mark, Karleigh Leo hit a three to make it 18-14.
  • 29 seconds left in the quarter, Kirstin Huggins sank one free throw and with just two seconds left a Brynne Deluzio three ends the quarter 22-14.

  • 29 seconds into the second quarter, a Julia Ewen free throw brought Alvernia within seven.
  • The Mustangs led an 8-7 run capped by a Huggins layup at the 4:09 mark.
  • At the 3:52 mark, Crist sank two free throws to extend the lead by 10, 32-22.
  • With 47 seconds left before the break, A Hall three gives Stevenson an 11 point lead, 35-24.

  • Kellie Johnson opened the half with a layup at the 8:59 mark to extend the lead by 13.
  • Following an Ewen free throw at the 8:44 mark, Hall responded with a layup eight seconds later to make the score 39-25.
  • At the 7:04 mark, Crist knocked down a three to jump the score 43-25.
  • Hall makes the score 48-26 as she posted a three at the 4:01 mark.
  • With 1:22 left until the final quarter, Huggins made a layup to increase the lead by 21, 52-31.
  • With four seconds left, a Zerbe three ends the quarter, 52-34.

  • Crist starts the final quarter when she hit a three at the 9:33 mark. Crist came back at the 8:40 mark to make two free throws for the Mustangs to make the score 57-34.
  • Zerbe made three Alvernia free throws at the 7:33 mark to bring the Golden Wolves within 21 of the Mustangs.
  • At the 2:41 mark, Leo places her second three of the game in the basket to make the score 73-49.
  • With 1:15 left in the game, Lydia Crist sank two free throws to bring the game 76-50.
  • Alvernia ended the game off a Erin Malin free throw with 25 seconds left to make the score 76-53.

  • Stevenson shot 36.55 overall, while Alvernia shot 29.3%.
  • The guests shot 33.3% (7-21) behind the arc and went 23-35 at the free throw line while the hosts went 13-20 at the free throw line.
  • The Mustangs recorded 47-41 rebound average over the Golden Wolves.
  • Crist and Hall each totaled 16 points for the Mustangs, Crist also had five steals and Hall dished out five assists.
  • Deluzio recorded 10 points.
  • Coleman had 10 rebounds and three blocks.

  • Stevenson will host MAC Commonwealth opponent Widener on Saturday, January 11 at 1 p.m. at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
