Mustangs Collect First Home Win of the Season Against Goucher

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team hosted Goucher Monday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium for a non-conference match-up. The Mustangs walked away with their first home win of the season, 85-45. Freshman Karleigh Leo hit four three-pointers for the Mustangs and matched her career high with 14 points.

  • Goucher (4-8) started the game off with back to back baskets from Shelby Apostol and Anise Williams at the 8:25 and 8:00 mark, respectively.
  • Senior Hannah Crist hit a three for Stevenson (4-8) at the 7:30 mark.
  • 18 seconds later, a Morgan Pennick three tied the game 6-6..
  • An Apostol three tied the game, 9-9, at the 4:18 mark.
  • With 30 seconds left in the quarter, Leo hit a three, and with four seconds left Crist converted a breakaway layup to make it 18-13 after one.

  • 14 seconds into the second quarter, Leo netted her second three of the game to give the Mustangs an eight-point lead.
  • Olivia Coleman sank two free throws with four and half minutes left in the half to give Stevenson an eight point lead, 29-21 
  • The Gophers responded with a Jorryn Avery three to shrink the lead by two at the 6:15 mark.
  • Brandi Hall converted a layup at the 1:55 mark, then had a steal and layup 15 seconds later to make it 41-26, capping an 18-5 run.
  • The Mustangs took a 41-28 lead into the locker room.

  • Crist hit a three 31 seconds into the second half after Coleman opened the half with a layup to extend the lead by 18.
  • The Mustangs utilized a 12-0 run in the first four and half minutes to open up a 53-28 lead.
  • Anise Williams made a layup at the 6:43 mark to half the Goucher drought.
  • The guests came within 19 of the hosts, 54-35, after two Kyani Quarles free throws at the 3:47 mark.
  • Leo made two threes in the final minute of the quarter to make it 64-36 with 10 minutes to play.

  • At the 6:45 mark, Crist knocked down a three to jump the score, 73-36.
  • A Bailey Mathias three with 4:15 remaining capped a 16-0 Mustang run.
  • Two Apostol free throws marked the Gophers' first points of the final period.
  • Mathias made three free throws with 27 seconds left to cap the Stevenson scoring for the evening.

  • Stevenson shot 46.3% overall, while Goucher shot 29.8%.
  • The hosts shot 30.0% (9-30) behind the arc and went 14-20 at the free throw line while the guests went 13-20 at the free throw line.
  • The Mustangs recorded 46 rebounds and held a 46-28 rebounding advantage.
  • Leo tallied four of the nine threes for the Mustangs, she also matched her career-high of 14 points.
  • Hall and Crist totaled 16 points, Hall also registered six steals and six rebounds, while Crist had four steals.
  • Coleman registered 10 points.
  • Morgan Pennick tallied nine points and dished out nine assists.
  • Mathias posted a career-high six points.
  • 11 different players scored for the Mustangs.

  • The Mustangs travel to Alvernia on Wednesday, January 8 for an 8 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match-up at McCloskey Court.
  • Stevenson will host MAC Commonwealth opponent No. 24 Widener on Saturday, January 11 at 1 p.m. at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
