Early Second Half Push by Alvernia Breaks Open Tight Game

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Alvernia broke open what had been a tight game with a 21-0 run early in the second half as the Golden Wolves upended Stevenson 79-57 in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Stevenson (5-14, 2-8 MAC Commonwealth) used an early 8-0 run to take an 11-7 lead at the 14:52 mark on a Norman Hughes three.
  • Alvernia (10-8, 6-4) scored the next seven points to take a 14-11 lead with 10:36 on the clock.
  • The lead changed hands five times over the next several minutes, with a Bo Wesley layup with 6:44 left before halftime giving the hosts a 23-20 advantage.
  • Eight straight points by the Golden Wolves put them back on top, 28-23, on a Malik Green basket at the 4:27 mark.
  • A steal and layup by Evan Joseph capped a 6-0 Stevenson spurt and put the Mustangs up 29-28 with just over two minutes to go.
  • The lead changed hands three more times, with a Justin Thomas basket putting Alvernia on top 33-32 at the break.
  • The first half saw 12 lead changes. and neither side leading by more than five.

  • A three from the left corner by Isaiah Oshinnaiye on Stevenson's first possession of the half put it in front 35-33.
  • The Golden Wolves made nine of their next 10 field goal attempts and opened a 54-35 lead with14:46 remaining.
  • Alvernia took a 62-39 lead with just over 11 minutes to go.
  • The Mustangs got the lead down to 17, 70-53, with just under five minutes to go on a Cam Harris triple.
  • The guests led by as many as 26 down the stretch.

  • Alvernia shot 64.5% in the second half and 53.1% for the game, while the Mustangs shot 43.5% overall.
  • The Mustangs went 9-18 behind the arc, while Alvernia was 9-22.
  • The guests held a 26-6 lead in points off turnovers.
  • Hughes was 3-7 behind the arc and finished with 15 points.  He reached double figures for the fifth straight game.
  • Joseph totaled nine points, six rebounds and five assists, making all four of his field goal attempts.
  • Harris was 2-3 behind the arc and added eight points.
  • Wesley had three blocks.
  • Both teams grabbed 29 rebounds.

  • Stevenson travels to league-leading Widener Saturday for a 3 pm tip.
  • The Mustangs return home next Wednesday, February 5, for a 6 pm MAC Commonwealth contest against Albright at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
