Barcless, Aguirre Lead Mustangs to 5-1 Victory Over King's

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Trinity Barcless netted her first career hat trick while freshman Karly Aguirre dished out a career-best four assists as the Mustangs posted a 5-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory over King's (Pa.) Saturday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • The Mustangs (7-7-2, 5-4-0 UCHC) went on their first of nine power plays at the 3:28 mark of the contest.
  • Stevenson needed just 28 seconds to find the back of the net as Barcless scored on the fourth shot of the player advantage.
  • Aguirre had her initial shot saved before feeding it up top to freshman Ashlyn Bray whose shot from the point was deflected in by Barcless.
  • Just past the midway point of the period, the Monarchs (2-13-1, 1-8-0 UCHC) tied the game after the Mustangs turned the puck over in their defensive zone.
  • The hosts went back on the power play a 1:10 later but the lone shot on net by sophomore Tea Ferrara was saved while senior Jordan Pirrello saw her shot hit off the post.
  • Less than a minute after the power play expired, Barcless netted her second goal of the period as Aguirre found the junior in front of the net. Sophomore Paige Sullivan picked up the secondary assist.
  • On the Mustangs third power play of the period, Pirrello scored 29 seconds into the player advantage to give the hosts a 3-1 lead with 48.7 seconds remaining.
  • Barcless fed Aguirre in front of the net whose shot was saved by Kiva Sierra Stoltz before Pirrello buried the rebound.
  • Stevenson went on the penalty kill for the first time with 38 seconds remaining in the frame that carried over into the second period.

  • Sophomore Nikki Kendrick recorded a shorthanded shot in the opening seconds of the period but it was stopped by Sierra Stoltz.
  • At the 6:52 mark, Barcless completed her hat trick on assists from her linemates, freshman KaliJo Zagula and Aguirre.
  • The Mustangs went on the power play following the goal and had 1:02 of a two-player advantage but it lasted only 25 seconds after being whistled for their own penalty.
  • King's had its own five-on-three advantage for 13 seconds but after a blocked shot by Kendrick, the sophomore had a breakaway and beat Sierra Stoltz low for the score.

  • Zagula had her shot hit off the post early in the period.
  • Both team's were scoreless on the power play in the period as the Mustangs went scoreless on their three opportunities.
  • The Monarchs had just two shots in the period, both coming on the power play.
  • Stevenson held King's without a shot for the final 13:22.

  • Stevenson outshot King's, 59-14, including 24-2 in the third period. The team's 59 shots matches its season-high.
  • The Mustangs finished 2-for-9 on the power play and 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
  • The hosts won 55 of the 71 face-offs, including 18 by both Barcless and Ferrara.
  • Barcless netted the 16th hat trick in program history and third this season as Kendrick and Pirrello each netted hat tricks earlier this season.
  • Meanwhile, Aguirre's four assists ranks tied for second in program history, also set by Kendrick versus King's.
  • Kendrick's shorthanded goal is the first of her career and the Mustangs first this season. It is the 16th shorthanded goal in program history.
  • The Mustangs improve to 6-2-1 on home ice this season and a perfect 6-0-0 versus King's.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 1 when the Mustangs travel to Nazareth for a UCHC contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs are back home on Friday, February 7 when the team hosts a UCHC contest versus Manhattanville. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
