11th-Ranked Mustangs Fall in Overtime to Fredonia

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Fredonia scored the game-winning goal 38 seconds into overtime to escape with a 4-3 overtime victory and hand the 11th-ranked Stevenson men's ice hockey team just its fourth loss Friday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • The Blue Devils (8-44-) had the first scoring opportunity as a shot early in the contest hit off the left post.
  • It was the Mustangs (12-4-0) that got on the board first as senior Christian Ripley netted a goal just 3:45 into the contest.
  • Junior Matt Cappucci found junior Houston Wilson through the neutral zone before passing it across to Ripley at the blue line who sent a backhander over the glove side of Ryan Pascarella.
  • At the 6:16 mark, Stevenson went on the game's first power play but Pascarella made three saves while junior Carl Lyden fired a shot off the post.
  • Fredonia had back-to-back power play opportunities with Victor Tracy hitting the pipe on the second man advantage.
  • With 1:27 remaining in the period, the hosts doubled its lead as senior Nick Gray scored on assists from sophomore Ryan Patrick and freshman Austin Master.
  • After a turnover was forced as the blue line, Master sent a shot wide before Patrick collected it in the corner and centered it to Gray for the score.

  • Fredonia went on the power play just 3:25 into the period and scored midway through the man advantage to get within one.
  • Fifty-eight seconds after scoring, the Blue Devils were called for a penalty as the Mustangs had back-to-back power play opportunities.
  • On Stevenson's second power play opportunity of the period, it was freshman Ryan Kenny who came up big as he made a stop on a two-on-one opportunity.
  • As the power play was expiring, junior Oleg Potemkin fired a shot on an open net but Pascarella made a diving save to knock the puck away.
  • The Mustangs went on their third straight power play but both shots were saved while Kenny made a shorthanded save.

  • The Blue Devils started the period with 1:14 remaining on their power play that carried over from the second period but Kenny stopped the lone shot.
  • At the 2:51 mark, Ripley netted his second goal of the game after Brenza collected a turnover at the blue line and fed it ahead to his linemate.
  • Just 1:01 later, Fredonia responded to get back within one.
  • The Blue Devils went back on the power play at the 6:09 mark and tied the game at 3-3 with 25 seconds remaining on the man advantage.
  • Stevenson went on the power play with 5:47 remaining but managed just one shot on net.
  • With seven seconds remaining, five players were sent to the box, including three on the Mustangs, giving Fredonia a power play attempt.

  • On the opening shift, the Blue Devils scored just 38 seconds into the period, as Gregg Lee scored on a rebound attempt.

  • Fredonia outshot Stevenson, 33-31, including 12-8 in the third period.
  • It is the third straight win for the Blue Devils in the series as five of the seven meetings have gone to overtime.
  • All four losses for the Mustangs have come on home ice as the team is 6-4-0 at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
  • It is the third multi-goal game of the season for Ripley.
  • Brenza dished out his 18th assist of the season, setting the team's new single season record for assists.
  • Stevenson won 43 of the 70 face-offs, with Brenza winning a game-high 17.
  • Kenny finished with 29 saves in net while Patrick had a game-high three blocked shots.
