Mustangs Edged By Conference Frontrunner Widener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - MAC Commonwealth leader Widener placed four players in double figures as it edged Stevenson 79-76 in men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Stevenson (5-10, 2-4 MAC Commonwealth) scored the first five points of the game and held a 12-2 lead following a four-point play by Norman Hughes with just over three minutes gone.
  • Hughes had the first 12 Mustang points of the game.
  • A three by Mark Terrell with 12:15 on the clock extended Stevenson's lead to 27-7, and the Mustangs took their largest lead, 30-9, on a Cam Harris three with 11:46 remaining.
  • Widener (12-2 5-0 MAC Commonwealth) scored the next seven points and got within 30-16 on a three-point play by Jared Hughes.
  • The Pride kept chipping away and pulled within eight, 34-26, with 7:54 left.
  • A fast-break layup by Bo Wesley with 6:26 on the clock made it a 10-point game.
  • Widener cut the lead to one, 38-37, with just over two minutes to go before halftime.
  • Isaiah Oshinnaiye scored with 1:49 to go to make it 40-37 in favor of the hosts.
  • The Pride scored the final four points of the half and took a 41-40 lead into the locker room.

  • Jaylin Johnson scored on Stevenson's first possession of the second half to put the Mustangs back in front.
  • Widener scored seven straight to go up 48-42 with just under 17 minutes remaining.
  • The Mustangs countered with a 10-0 run of their own and a Terrell basket made it 52-48 with 15:12 to go.
  • The Pride outscored Stevenson 14-4 over the next six-plus minutes and built a 62-56 lead at the 8:54 mark.
  • A fast-break layup by Evan Joseph with 7:06 capped a 6-0 Mustang run and tied the game 62-62.
  • Widener utilized a 10-0 run to go up 72-62 with 4:05 left.
  • Hughes knocked down a triple with 1:43 on the clock to cap a 10-2 Mustang run and pull his team within two, 74-72.
  • Connor Laverty scored on Widener's next trip down the floor and put the Pride up 76-72.
  • Johnson scored with just under a minute left to again make it a one-possession game.
  • The Pride went just 3-6 at the free throw line down the stretch and led 79-76 with 11 seconds left after Laverty made 1-of-2 at the line.
  • Stevenson did not get a look at a game-tying shot as it turned the ball over on its final possession.

  • Stevenson shot 63.6% (14-22) in the second half and 51.8% for the game, while Widener shot 44.6% for the contest.
  • The Pride forced 23 Mustang turnovers, leading to a 28-14 lead in points off turnovers.
  • The Mustangs were 11-30 behind the arc, while Widener was 9-20 from long range.
  • Stevenson outrebounded Widener 40-30.
  • Hughes finished 6-15 behind the arc and finished with 25 points.
  • Johnson tallied 16 points, six rebounds and six assists, going 8-13 from the floor.
  • Terrell added 10 points and seven rebounds.
  • Harris was 3-6 behind the arc and added nine points.
  • Wesley blocked four shots on the afternoon.

  • Stevenson is idle until next Saturday, January 18, when it hosts Lebanon Valley in a 3 pm MAC Commonwealth game at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
