Sedgwick Throws Five TDs, Mustangs Roll Past FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. - Stevenson University sophomore quarterback Ryan Sedgwick threw for 379 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score as the Mustangs rolled past FDU-Florham 49-15 in Middle Atlantic Conference football Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

  • FDU-Florham (1-3, 0-2 MAC) needed just two plays to take a 7-0 lead 37 seconds in on a 35-yard run by A. Blackman.
  • On the third play of Stevenson's (2-2, 1-1 MAC) first drive, a 65-yard pass from Sedwick to Vincent Lee tied the game at the 12:45 mark.
  • After a three-and-out by the Devils, Stevenson got down to the FDU 34, but Sedgwick was intercepted at the 13.
  • The Mustangs were at their own 15 after another Devil three-and-out, and on second-and-12, a high snap sailed through the back of the end zone to put FDU-Florham up 9-7.
  • On Stevenson's next drive, a three-yard completion to Seth Diorio capped an eight-play, 82-yard drive, and put the Mustangs on top 14-9 14 seconds before the end of the quarter.

  • The Mustangs extended the lead to 21-9 with 9:11 left before halftime as Sedgwick called his own number and got in on a one-yard run to conclude an eight-play, 64-yard march.
  • Kevin Joppy had six carries for 49 yards on the drive, including a 24-yard rush near midfield.
  • FDU-Florham took advantage of a Mustang fumble, getting the ball on the Stevenson 20 after its own drive stalled at midfield.  
  • A 20-yard pass play on the first play of the drive pulled the Devils within 21-15 as the PAT try was blocked by Chikwado Nsoedo.
  • Sedgwick found Chaz Lyles for a 43-yard touchdown toss with 2:41 left on the clock to make it a 28-15 game.

  • Stevenson started the second half at its own 47 following a 36-yard kickoff return by Lee.
  • A 53-yard drive saw Sedgwick find Keenan Franz for a seven-yard completion on the drive's seventh play to up the lead to 35-15 at the 11:25 mark.

  • Franz had his second TD reception of the game, this one for 42 yards, to cap a six-play, 65-yard drive with 12:59 remaining.
  • The Mustangs chewed up nearly nine minutes on their final drive, running 15 plays and moving 92 yards, and a 15-yard touchdown run by Titus Johnson closed out the scoring.

  • Sedgwick finished 24-31 passing for 379 yards and five touchdowns while also carrying nine times for 11 yards.
  • Sedgwick's five TD passes are one shy of the program single-game record of six, while his 379 yards are the fourth-highest single-game total in the Mustang record books.
  • Joppy finished with 20 carries for 118 yards, while Johnson had 10 rushes for 68 yards.
  • Lyles had nine catches for 106 yards, while Franz had eight grabs for 138 yards and two scores.
  • Lee also had 138 yards on six receptions.
  • Lyles passed the 100-catch mark for his career and now has 101 career receptions.
  • Brody Campbell finished 7-7 on extra point attempts.
  • Mario McIntyre finished with three tackles for a loss for 13 yards, while Nsoedo also had a sack in addition to his blocked PAT.
  • Izaiha Pitts had a team-high five tackles, including one for a loss.
  • JanMichael Finch also had a quarterback sack.
  • The Mustangs rolled up 603 yards of total offense, outgaining the Devils 603-190.  The 603 yards is the third-highest single game mark for total offense.
  • Stevenson finished 11-14 on third down conversions.
  • The Mustangs won the time of possession battle for the fourth time in four games this season, holding the ball for 36:57.
  • Stevenson improved to 9-0 all-time against FDU-Florham.
  • The win was the 50th in Stevenson program history and also win No. 50 for Ed Hottle as coach of the Mustangs.

  • Stevenson opens a three-game homestand next Saturday, October 5, hosting Widener in a 1 pm Middle Atlantic Conference contest at Mustang Stadium.
