Mustangs Erase Pair of Deficits to Win Conference Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson field hockey team erased a one-goal deficit twice as the Mustangs posted a 3-2 MAC Commonwealth victory over Arcadia in the conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

  • The Knights (2-7, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) had the first shot of the game but the turn around shot in close was kicked away by senior Kelsey Eure.
  • Late in the quarter, Eure came up with another save on a shot in close before the rebound attempt was sent wide by Arcadia.
  • The visitors recorded all three shots in the opening quarter, including two shots on goal.

  • Michaela Ferlow, who recorded the first four shots of the game, deflected a hard blast towards the goal high over the net in the opening two minutes of the quarter.
  • Just past the midway point of the quarter, Mickie March blasted a shot from just inside the circle but it was blocked by a Stevenson defender.
  • With 3:10 remaining, Eure come up with a big stop as a shot in close from Ferlow off the corner was denied.
  • The Knights had seven consecutive penalty corners in a 1:20 span and recorded five shots, including two on net.

  • Arcadia got on the board just 3:52 into the quarter as March scored on her own rebound attempt after an initial save by Eure.
  • Just 1:16 later, the Mustangs (4-7, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) responded as a shot by senior Anna Bauer hit off a Knight defender and into the back of the cage.
  • With 5:40 remaining, a goal by the Knights was wiped away for a penalty stroke that was converted by Regan Sammons.
  • Just 28 seconds later, Stevenson was awarded a penalty stroke that was converted by senior Jordan Hershberger to knot the game at 2-2.
  • The Mustangs their first lead of the day with 1:41 remaining in the quarter as sophomore Kaitlin Karns lifted a shot over the goalkeeper and into the side net.

  • Five minutes into the quarter, Bauer recorded a shot on net but it was turned aside by Ashton Evans.
  • On the eighth straight penalty corner by Arcadia in a 3:14 span, Eure made a kick save on a blast from the top of the arc.
  • With 28 seconds remaining in regulation, the Knights had a penalty stroke that was saved by a diving Eure to keep the Mustangs lead at one.

  • Arcadia outshot Stevenson, 21-7, including 12-0 in the opening half.
  • The Knights also held a 25-5 advantage in penalty corners, including 11-1 in the fourth quarter.
  • Karns netted her team leading ninth goal of the season while Bauer scored her seventh.
  • It is the first goal of the season for Hershberger and second in her career.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, October 1 when the Mustangs travel to Gettysburg for a non-conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs return home on Wednesday, October 9 when the team hosts a non-conference contest versus St. Mary's (Md.) beginning at 4:00 p.m.
