Mustangs Outlast Salisbury, Move to 9-0

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team outlasted Salisbury 3-2 to cap a 2-0 day on day two of its quad match.  Earlier in the day the Mustangs swept Gallaudet 3-0.

  • Set scores were 25-15, 25-13, 25-12.
  • Stevenson (9-0) used a late 6-0 run in the first set to pull away up 18-14, with an Emily Pellini kill ending the set.
  • Gallaudet (1-9) scored four of the first five points in the second frame, but Stevenson took the lead with four straight points of its own.
  • Holding a 15-10 lead, the Mustangs used an 8-1 run to put the set out of reach.
  • The Bison hung around in the third, trailing 16-12, but the Mustangs ended the match on a 9-0 run capped by a Piper Connors service ace.
  • Stevenson hit .355 for the match, while the Bison were held to a .103 clip.
  • Katie Leftridge and Victoria Prokic led the Mustangs with seven kills apiece, with Prokic hitting .545 and Leftridge .438.
  • Connors and Simone Gest each had five kills.
  • Connors also finished with three service aces.
  • Caroline Dangel and Julie Nightwine each registered 19 assists.
  • Pellini had a team-high eight digs.

  • Set scores were 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13.
  • The fourth set was tied 20-20 before the Sea Gulls (7-2) closed on a late 5-2 run to force a fifth set.
  • The deciding set saw nine ties, the latest at 11-11.
  • Stevenson took the lead for good on a Dangel kill, followed by a block by Leftridge and Sarah Straub to make it 13-11.
  • Salisbury cut the lead to one twice, including 14-13, but a Sea Gull attack error ended things.
  • Prokic racked up 21 kills on .576 hitting and also had four blocks, while Shannon Baily tallied 15 kills and Mackenzie Blevins 14.
  • Leftridge tallied 26 digs, while Pellini finished with 20.
  • Dangel had 29 assists and Nightwine 27.
  • Stevenson hit .206 for the match while the Sea Gulls hit .186.

  • Prokic's 21 kills in the nightcap were a career high.
  • Stevenson is 9-0 to start a season for the fifth time in program history (2008, 2011, 2013, 2017).
  • The Mustangs have won 11 straight home matches dating back to last season.

  • Stevenson is back in action Tuesday night, hosting Messiah in a MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium at 7 pm.
