Mustangs Rally Late, Ultimately Fall to Bridgewater

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson football team cut a 23-0 halftime deficit to 30-22 in the fourth quarter, but visiting Bridgewater (Va.) scored late for a 37-22 non-conference victory Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

  • Stevenson (1-1) worked its way down to the Bridgewater 29 on its first possession before a third down sack forced the Mustangs to punt to the Eagle 9.
  • Bridgewater (2-0) put together a 12-play, 91-yard drive capped by a 10-yard completion from Jay Scroggins to Trey Stephens with 2:40 on the clock.  The PAT try was no good for a 6-0 lead.

  • After the Mustangs went three-and-out, the Eagles started at midfield and a nine-play, 52-yard drive made it 13-0 on a three-yard run by Demetreus Jalepes.
  • The Mustangs went 44 yards in 10 plays before their next drive stalled at the Bridgewater 31.
  • A 41-yard field goal by Logan Weis with 2:36 on the clock extended the Bridgewater advantage to 16-0.
  • On its final drive of the half, Bridgewater went 76 yard in nine plays in just 53 seconds and a five-yard pass from Scroggins to Jarrod Denham made it 23-0 at intermission.

  • After Stevenson forced the first Eagle punt on the opening drive of the second half, the hosts went 83 yards in 10 plays, and a nine-yard completion from Ryan Sedgwick to Keenan Franz got the Mustangs on the board.
  • Franz had four receptions for 64 yards on the drive, including a 28-yard grab.
  • The Eagles went three-and-out on their next drive, giving the ball back to Stevenson with 7:26 left in the third.
  • An 86-yard drive in 17 plays, capped by a one-yard keeper by Sedgwick, cut the Eagle lead to 23-14 with 1:24 on the clock.

  • A nine-yard run by Scroggins with 11:23 left ended a 10-play, 60-yard drive and put Bridgewater up 30-14.
  • Stevenson took advantage of a roughing the passer penalty on its next drive, going 59-yards in six plays, and a 24-yard strike from Sedgwick to Franz made it 30-22 with just under nine minutes to go as a two-point pass to Franz on a crossing route was good.
  • The guests countered by running 10 plays in 5:18 and moving 73 yards to score on a five-yard run by Jalepes with 3:25 to go.
  • The Mustangs fumbled on their final possession with 1:28 to go and Bridgewater was able to run out the clock.

  • Sedgwick finished 23-37 passing for 269 yards and a pair of scores.
  • Franz had a career-best 10 receptions for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
  • Vincent Lee had four receptions, while Chaz Lyles and Saadiq Pitts each had three grabs.
  • Pitts also carried seven times for 32 yards.
  • Mason Setness had a team-high nine tackles, with Ryan Schoppert recording seven.
  • Orion Twitty and Don Jones each had six stops.
  • Bridgewater outgained Stevenson 423-326, with the Eagles racking up 206 rushing yards.
  • Lyles' three receptions moved him into sole possession of fourth place on the program reception list with 83.
  • Stevenson saw a string of 67 straight games forcing a turnover snapped.  It marked the first game without a takeaway since November 3, 2012 against Lycoming.

  • Stevenson hits the road next Saturday, traveling to Middle Atlantic Conference preseason favorite Delaware Valley in the conference opener in a 1 pm contest.
  • The Mustangs return home Saturday, October 5 to face Widener in a 1 pm game at Mustang Stadium.
