Mustangs Sweep Rutgers-Camden In Opener

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 sweep of Rutgers-Camden at DeSales University's Billera Hall Friday afternoon.  Set scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-18.

  • After three ties, the Mustangs (1-0) rattled off four straight points to take an 8-4 lead on a Julie Nightwine service ace.
  • Stevenson extended the lead to seven, 16-9, with three straight points capped by an Emily Pellini ace.
  • Five straight points capped by a Katie Leftridge kill and a Scarlet Raptor attack error made it 21-11.
  • Back-to-back kills by freshman Simone Gest wrapped up the set.

  • A 5-1 run broke a 5-5 tie and gave the Mustangs a 10-6 lead following a Rutgers-Camden attack error.
  • A block by freshmen Shannon Baily and Haley Hoover and a Rutgers-Camden attack error increased the lead to 15-9.
  • Kills by Hoover and Victoria Prokic moved the lead to 23-16, then two straight errors by the Scarlet Raptors closed out the frame.

  • Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 4-0 lead as it fought to stay alive.
  • The Mustangs countered with a 7-0 run capped by a block by Mackenzie Blevins and Sarah Straub to take a 7-4 lead.
  • After the Scarlet Raptors battled back to forge an 8-8 tie, a 6-1 Stevenson run that saw a Kayla Vaeth service ace and a Rysleigh Reeves kill up the lead to 15-9.
  • Rutgers-Camden battled back with six straight points, including three straight kills by Devyn Cobb, to tie the set 17-17.
  • Clinging to a 19-18 lead, the Mustangs scored the final six points to put the match away.
  • The clinching run saw two Nightwine aces and ended on back-to-back ball handling errors by the Scarlet Raptors.

  • Stevenson won its 15th straight season opener.
  • The Mustangs hit .250 as a team while the Scarlet Raptors hit .069.
  • Straub led the Mustangs with seven kills, while Reeves totaled six.
  • Caroline Dangel registered 18 assists, while Nightwine had 15, eight digs and four aces.

  • Stevenson is in action twice Saturday at DeSales, facing the host Bulldogs at 10 am and Keystone at noon.
  • The Mustangs are on the road for their first six contests before the home opener on Friday, September 13 at 6 pm against Dickinson at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
