Mustangs Honor Fallen Friend Pregame, But Fall To Lebanon Valley

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's basketball team honor former player Christian Roberts who tragically had his life cut short with a presentation, video tribute, and moment of silence prior to tipoff against MAC Commonwealth foe Lebanon Valley on Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gym.  Unfortunately, the Dutchmen shot over 50-percent from the floor en route to an 85-75 win over the Mustangs.  Even, with the loss, however, Stevenson by virtue of Hood defeating Albright clinched a spot in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth playoffs.

  • Lebanon Valley () thanks to a three-pointer for Zach Tucker 3:23 into the game grabbed an early 7-4 advantage.
  • Stevenson () not even a minute later trimmed the margin to one 7-6 after a steal by senior Marcus Dentley at center court found a wide-open junior Mark Terrell who jammed it home.
  • With 12:56 to play in the first half a steal and transition layup for AJ Catanzaro closed out a 9-1 run to open up a 16-7 lead.  During that stretch, Tucker picked up five of the nine.
  • A pair of jumpers knocked down by senior Johnny Rhodes helped the Mustangs pull with seven 18-11 at the 9:37 mark.
  • The following two minutes saw the Dutchmen go on a 10-0 finished by a Mason Green triple to extend the advantage to 28-11.
  • The Mustangs responded with a converted layup and one for Dentley along with a three by senior Montaque Wright to close the gap to 28-17 with 5:36 in the half.
  • With Stevenson trailing 32-18 under 3:30 to go five straight from Dentley and a foul shot for Terrell knocked the deficit to 32-24.
  • Unfortunately, Lebanon Valley outscored the home side 7-1 down the stretch as a jumper at the buzzer by Catanzaro sent the visitors to the locker room ahead 39-25.

  • The Dutchmen began the second hot as well opening on a 6-0 run finished by a Tucker foul soul to push the advantage to 20 at 45-25 just 1:34 into the period.
  • Both sides exchanged points over the ensuing two minutes but a Jeremy Deihm pushed the guests lead to 53-31 with 16:18 remaining.
  • Five consecutive points out of the hands of Wright in a 31-second span cut the score down to 53-36.
  • A bucket by Deihm slowed the push for a brief moment before another Wright triple coupled with two Dentley free throws kept the Mustangs hanging tough at 55-41 still with 14-minutes to go.
  • With ten minutes to play and Stevenson still behind 61-44, Wright attempted to single-handedly bring the home side back into the game going on a 9-0 solo gallop over a 1:47 span to cut the margin to 61-53 at the 11:44 mark.
  • Lebanon Valley never let the Mustangs in it the rest of the way as a layup for Chris Anderson with 2:21 remaining recaptured a double-digit edge 77-60.
  • A basket out of the hand of Dentley pulled the score back to within eight 83-75 under a minute to play, but a pair of free throws for Tucker capped the scoring on the night 85-75.

  • The Dutchmen were 29-54 (53.7%) from the floor compared to Stevenson 27-59 (45.8%).
  • Lebanon Valley had the edge on the glass 37-30.
  • The Mustangs hit nine triples to the visitors eight.
  • Wright posted a game-high 29 points on 11-21 shooting along with seven rebounds.  It was his 11th game scoring 20 or more.
  • Dentley also hit 20-plus adding 22 aided by going 5-5 on the charity stripe.
  • Deihm paced four Dutchmen in double-figures with 20.

  • The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, February 9, when they visit the Widener University Pride in MAC Commonwealth action beginning at 3pm in Chester, Pennslyvania.
