Darosa Sets Single Game Save Record in Setback Versus No. 2 Elmira

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Caitie Darosa set the single game record with 69 saves while classmate Kellen Wittman netted a second period goal and senior Maddy Ricci recorded 11 blocked shots as the Mustangs fell 5-1 versus No. 2 Elmira on senior day Saturday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • The two teams traded the opening two shots before the Soaring Eagles (22-2-1, 18-0-0 UCHC) got on the board just 1:02 into the contest on a goal by Maddy Jerolman.
  • Darosa faced eight more shots in the next four minutes before the visitors added a second goal at the 5:34 mark.
  • At the 8:51 mark, the Mustangs (9-14-2, 6-10-2 UCHC) earned the first power play and fired two shots on net but both were saved by Elizabeth Hanson.
  • The hosts recorded another two shots on its second power play attempt with 5:16 remaining in the period.

  • Just 3:37 into the frame, Stevenson had its third power play attempt but it was Elmira who recorded three shots, including a shorthanded goal by Katie Granato.
  • Late in the period, Ricci recorded three blocked shots during a single shift and finished the period with six blocked shots.
  • With 1:01 remaining, Wittman scored after making a move on a defender and Hanson after an pass from the defensive zone by senior Cierra Siemasko.

  • The Soaring Eagles added two goals in the period, including the third goal of the weekend by Emma Crocker at the 1:50 mark.
  • Ricci added another five blocked shots in the period.
  • Darosa stopped 29 shots in the period as the Mustangs were outshot, 31-3 in the frame.

  • Elmira outshot Stevenson, 74-15.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Soaring Eagles did not have a power play attempt.
  • Stevenson finished with 32 blocked shots, with Siemasko and junior Jordan Pirrello each adding three. Fifteen different players recorded a blocked shot.
  • Darosa's 69 saves are 19 more than the previous record held by Sarah Modzelewski '16 versus Elmira in 2013.
  • The assist by Siemasko moves her into solo fourth place with 32 career assists.
  • In pregame ceremonies, the Mustangs honored seniors Darosa, Ricci, Siemasko, Wittman, and Allie Sabatini.
