ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Stevenson men's hockey team got goals from junior Dominic Brenza and freshman Ryan Patrick in the first period and by junior Justin Stelzer and classmate Austin Swingle in the third, but it was not enough as the host Elmira netted a pair in the second and four in the final frame en route to a 6-4 win over the Mustangs on Friday night at the Murray Athletic Center in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action.

• Elmira (14-8-2, 12-3-2 UCHC) went to the power play less than a minute into the game and fired eight shots only two of which got through to freshman goalie Riley McVeigh who pushed both to the side.
• Stevenson (10-14-0, 7-10-0 UCHC) recorded their first shot on goal a little over three minutes in as junior Nick Gray had his shot stopped by Jake Sabourin.
• The Mustangs first man advantage came with 15:44 to go when Blake O'Neill was sent to the box for tripping.  During the man-up junior defenseman, Bruce Stachitas had a shot saved by Sabourin and defensive partner Jarrod Vroman missed the net with his attempt.
• With seven minutes gone the visitors put pressure on the Soaring Eagles net posting six consecutive shots in a little over a minute span as three shots were blocked while blasts from sophomore Oleg Potemkin and freshman Luke Benitez were denied by Sabourin.
• At the 8:47 mark while on the power play Stevenson got on the scoreboard thanks to the junior class as Stachitas hit Christian Ripley with a pass who laid the puck off to Brenza who ripped it past Sabourin for the 1-0 lead.
• Two minutes later the Mustangs were once again up a man as Spencer Carter sat for tripping.  With 27-seconds remaining on the advantage a pass from sophomore Houston Wilson came to classmate Aaron Murray who set-up Patrick for the 2-0 edge.
• The guests went to the power play one more time during the period with 2:31 to go but the three shots from Benitez, Patrick and Stelzer were turned away.

• Elmira started the frame strong posted four shots in the opening 3:28, but the offerings by Connor Powell and Calvin Hughson were stopped by McVeigh.
• After a faceoff won by the home side at the 7:55 mark they went to work in the offensive zone as eight different Soaring Eagles fired a shot causing McVeigh to only make three saves during the three-minute push.
• A holding penalty against the Mustangs gave the hosts a power play that they took advantage of as Matthew Cousino took a pass from Nick Ford after being set-up by Matthew Cuce cut the margin to 2-1 with 5:23 remaining.
• The Soaring Eagles found the tying goal with 18:34 elapsed when Powell buried a feed from Ford knotting it 2-2 after two. 

• Just over four minutes into the third Elmira took their first lead of the day at 3-2 thanks Cuce who beat McVeigh after taking a pass from Ford.
• A penalty to Ripley for slashing gave the home team a power play that they cashed in on when Powell lit the lamp making it 4-2 with 14:19 to play.
• The Mustangs went a man-up at the 8:26 mark with Hughson in the box for high sticking, during which Stachitas and Stelzer each took a shot but neither one made it to the goal.
• With the teams skating 4-on-4 the Soaring Eagles extended their advantage to 5-2 as Powell netted his second of the night with 7:15 remaining.
• Stevenson pulled to within 5-3 with 15:44 gone as Stelzer beat Sabourin aided by the passes of Vroman and Potemkin.
• With the Mustangs goalie pulled Cuce put the puck in the empty net to make it 6-3 with 1:04 to go.
• The scoring was not done though as Swingle took a pass from fellow junior Jake McNamara and put it past the goalie at the buzzer for the 6-4 final.

• Stevenson held a slim lead in shots 30-28.
• The Mustangs were 3-for 7 on the power play, while Elmira went 2 for 4.
• The Soaring Eagles won 32 of the 63 faceoffs.
• For Swingle, it was goal number five of the season.
• Patrick buried his third of the year while Brenza and Stelzer each potted goal number two.
• McVeigh made 22 saves in the loss
• Sabourin stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced.

• Thanks to the 4-3 win by Manhattanville over Neumann the Mustangs postseason hopes all come down to one final game tomorrow, February 16 when they visit Lebanon Valley College in Hershey, Pennsylvania for a 7pm face-off.  A Stevenson win over the Dutchmen is all it takes to clinch the sixth and final spot in the playoffs.
