Strong Fourth Quarter Moves Mustangs Past Hood on Senior Night

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by a career-best 23 points by sophomore Olivia Coleman, the Stevenson University women's basketball team pulled away from Hood for an 81-58 MAC Commonwealth victory Tuesday evening on Senior Night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Stevenson (12-12, 7-8 MAC Commonwealth) held Hood (6-18, 2-13 MAC Commonwealth) to just one field goal in the first seven-plus minutes and opened an 11-2 lead.
  • The Blazers reeled off eight straight points to pull within one, 11-10, at the 1:25 mark.
  • A basket by Laila Abdul-Rahman with 29 seconds to go put the hosts up 15-10 at the end of one period.
  • Coleman had seven of Stevenson's points in the frame.

  • Coleman extended the lead to 17-10 just over a minute into the second stanza.
  • Hood used a 10-2 run capped by a Mia Savoy three to take a 20-19 lead with 4:57 left before halftime.
  • Trailing 24-21, Stevenson held the Blazers scoreless the final 2:57 of the half, and a three by Hannah Crist right before intermission put the Mustangs up 26-24.

  • After two ties and two lead changes to open the second half, an 8-0 Mustang run capped by a steal and layup by Jonyae Curry at the 5:42 mark put the Mustangs on top 38-31.
  • Hood got the lead down to four three times, the last on a Laura Vetter three at the one-minute mark that made it 43-39.
  • Coleman scored with 42 seconds to go to put the Mustangs up 45-39 heading into the fourth.

  • Stevenson opened with nine straight points and two free throws by Montana Chance Herndon with 8:36 left pushed the Mustang lead to 15, 54-39.
  • From there, the Mustangs gradually pulled away, opening up a 25-point cushion, 81-56, on a three by Kellie Johnson with 46 seconds left.
  • Stevenson shot 13-17 (76.5%) in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Blazers 36-19.

  • Coleman finished 8-10 from the floor and 7-10 from the free throw line while also grabbing nine rebounds.  Her previous career-high was 18 points set last season against Widener.
  • Alexa Sanmartin finished one shy of her career high with 14 points on 6-9 shooting, while Brandi Hall matched her season-best with 14 points.
  • Crist finished with 10 points, while Curry added nine points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
  • All nine players who saw the floor for Stevenson scored.
  • The Mustangs shot 44.4% for the game, including 61.1% over the final 20 minutes, and were 6-14 behind the arc and 11-18 at the free throw line, while holding Hood to 39.3% shooting.
  • Stevenson forced 24 Blazer turnovers, leading to a 21-6 lead in points off turnovers, and held a 40-37 rebound advantage.  The Mustangs recorded 16 steals.
  • The Mustangs enter Saturday's regular season finale in a logjam for the final two MAC Commonwealth playoff spots.  Lebanon Valley, who's game against Messiah was postponed to Thursday, sits 8-6, while Arcadia upset Widener to move to 8-7.  Albright, Saturday's opponent, sits 6-8 with a game against Alvernia on Thursday.
  • Senior Curry and Chance Herndon were honored in Senior Night ceremonies prior to Tuesday's game.

  • Stevenson closes out the regular season Saturday on the road at Albright.  Tipoff is slated for 1 pm in Reading, Pa.
