Mustangs Upset 8th-Ranked Utica for Sixth Straight Win

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey senior Nick Gray finished with two goals and one assist as the Mustangs erased a pair of deficits in a 5-4 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over 8th-ranked Utica Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • The Mustangs (8-1-0, 5-1-0 UCHC) went on the power play just 5:10 into the contest with their lone shot on net saved by Sean Dickson.
  • With the team's playing four-on-four, Utica (5-2-2, 3-2-1 UCHC) got on the board just past the midway point of the period.
  • The hosts had a 9-8 edge in shots during the opening 20 minutes.

  • Just 3:07 into the period, senior Chris Javens tied the game as he beat Dickson glove side on a pass across the ice from junior Houston Wilson.
  • Senior Colin Woods picked up the secondary assist after playing it ahead from the defensive zone following a clear from freshman goaltender Ryan Kenny.
  • The Pioneers reclaimed a one-goal lead at ther 12:32 mark as Joey Rutkowski scored from a shot from the point.
  • Gray tied the game with a shorthanded goal on a rebound off a shot from senior Dominic Brenza. Dickson came out to play the puck but Brenza beat him to it, firing a shot off Dickson's pad.
  • With 1:11 remaining in the period, junior Carl Lyden gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead on an assist from senior Christian Ripley.

  • At the 3:40 mark of the third period, freshman Austin Master gave Stevenson a 4-2. Gray shot the puck off the side of the net before Wilson collected it behind the net and centered it to Master in front.
  • Utica got back within one with a power play goal by Daniel Fritz with 12:53 remaining.
  • After the Pioneers pulled Dickson for an extra skater, Gray scored an empty netter from center ice, pushing the lead back to two goals with 1:04 remaining in regulation.
  • The visitors scored with 11.8 seconds remaining but never gained control on the ensuing face-off as they were called for a delayed offsides.

  • Stevenson outshot Utica, 32-22, while the Pioneers held a slight, 36-35 edge in face-offs.
  • It is the first win versus a ranked opponent as the Mustangs were 0-10 prior to the victory.
  • It is also the first win in seven tries versus Utica as well as Stevenson's first win in the month of December.
  • The Mustangs have won six consecutive games and have scored at least five goals in five straight contests.

  • Stevenson concludes the 2019 portion of its schedule on Saturday, December 7 when the Mustangs host a UCHC contest versus Nazareth beginning at 3:00 p.m.
