Mustangs Drop League Opener at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Messiah College pulled away in the second half for a 65-47 MAC Commonwealth men's basketball victory over Stevenson University in the conference opener for both schools Wednesday night at Hitchcock Arena.

  • Stevenson (3-5, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) used a 6-0 spurt capped by a Kyle Wooldridge layup with 12:35 left in the first half to build a 14-4 lead.
  • Messiah (5-1, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) reeled off 11 straight points to take a 15-14 lead with 8:27 on the clock on a Josh Darville three.
  • Jaylin Johnson scored back-to-back baskets to give the lead back to the Mustangs, 18-15, at the 7:25 mark.
  • The Falcons used a 13-0 run to go up 10, 28-18, with 1:44 left before intermission.
  • A Cam Harris three snapped Stevenson's drought with 1:22 left, and a basket by Johnson with 32 seconds left pulled the guests within five, 28-23, at the break.

  • An early free throw by Damein Coleman made it 28-24 30 seconds into the second stanza.
  • Messiah opened up an 11-point cushion, 37-26, with 14:28 to play.
  • A Harris three with just over 14 minutes to go cut the Falcon lead to eight.
  • Nine straight points by the Falcons capped by a Sam Whittle three expanded the lead to 17, 46-29, with 12:35 to go.
  • A layup by Bo Wesley pulled the Mustangs within 13, 48-35, with just over 10 minutes left.
  • The hosts took their largest lead, 57-36, with just under eight minutes remaining.
  • Stevenson got within 16, 57-41, on a basket by Isaiah Oshinnaiye with 6:36 on the clock but got no closer.

  • Messiah shot 44.4% overall and made 12 of its 28 three-point attempts.
  • The Mustangs shot 35.4% overall and were 8-25 behind the arc.
  • The Falcons made all five of their free throw attempts, while Stevenson went 5-11 at the stripe.
  • Stevenson was edged 32-31 in rebounding, the first time all year it had not outrebounded its opponent.
  • Harris finished 4-6 behind the arc and totaled 12 points.
  • Johnson was the other Mustang in double figures, recording 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Norman Hughes added seven points off the bench.

  • Stevenson returns home for the first time since November 16 on Saturday, hosting Lycoming in a 3 pm MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
