Mustangs Drop Tight Contest to Arcadia

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team hosted Arcadia Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The visiting Knights closed the game on a 9-5 run to eke out a 54-52 win.

  • The Mustangs (2-6, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) took an early 6-4 lead on a basket by Hannah Crist at the 6:13 mark.
  • Arcadia (6-4, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) took a 9-8 lead on a three-point play by Sidney Barrer with 3:03 on the clock.
  • Seven straight points capped by a layup by Laila Abdul-Rahman put Stevenson up 15-9 with just under a minute left in the opening quarter.
  • The Mustangs led 15-11 after 10 minutes.

  • Two threes by Brandi Hall in the first 1:48 of the second pushed the hosts' lead to eight, 21-13.
  • Brynne Deluzio sank two free throws with four minutes left in the quarter to keep the lead at eight points, 23-15.
  • Arcadia scored the next five points of the game, a three by Julia Makowski and a Taylor Dunn jump shot with 3:25 left until the break to pull within three
  • Kellie Johnson hit a three with 1:44 on the clock to make it 26-20
  • Arcadia scored the final five points of the quarter to pull within one, 26-25, at intermission.

  • The Knights scored the first six points of the second half to go up 31-26 just over four minutes into the third.
  • At the 5:32 mark, Hall sank her third three of the game to bring Stevenson with two of the Knights, 31-29.
  • Following a Johnson steal, Hall came back with a fast break layup to tie the game, 31-31 at the 5:15 mark.
  • A Deluzio three put Stevenson back in the lead, 36-35, with two minutes left in the quarter.
  • With 1:18 left to play in the quarter, a Crist layup extended the Mustang lead, 40-35.
  • Sydney Cyr hit a three with 12 seconds left to pull Arcadia within two, 40-38, through three.

  • Stevenson scored the first four points of the fourth, with an Olivia Coleman basket just over a minute in making it 44-38. 
  • Arcadia cut the lead to one, 44-43, at the 6:32 mark, but Stevenson went back up four, 47-43, on a basket by Deluzio with 5:45 on the clock.
  • The guests reclaimed the lead, 48-47, on a Cyr triple with 4:44 left.
  • Coleman converted a layup 24 seconds later to put Stevenson back in control, but Arcadia retook the lead with 4:03 left.
  • With 2:44 left to play, Crist hit a three for the Mustangs to tie the game, 52-52.
  • Taylor Dunn scored with 1:40 left to put Arcadia up 54-52.
  • Stevenson turned the ball over on its next possession, but the Knights came up empty on their next trip, and Stevenson got it back with 35 seconds left.
  • The Mustangs misfired on a pair of three-point attempts and the Knights rebounded the second attempt to seal the game.

  • Stevenson shot 37.7% overall, while Arcadia shot 38.7%.
  • The Mustangs shot 35.0% (7-20) behind the arc and went 5-9 at the free throw line while the guests went 3-5 at the stripe and 3-10 behind the arc.
  • Both teams recorded 37 rebounds
  • The game featured eight lead changes and six ties.
  • Hall led the team with 15 points, five assists, three rebounds, and went 3-4 behind the arc.
  • Crist totaled 12 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
  • Two shy of a career-high, Coleman tallied 13 rebounds and also had seven points and three blocked shots.
  • Freshman Deluzio matched her career high with nine points.
  • Morgan Pennick had four assists and also registered a pair of steals.

  • The Mustangs travel to Springfield, Ohio on Sunday, December 29 for the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Tournament hosted by Wittenberg. The Mustangs will play Westminster (Mo.) at 2:15 p.m. Stevenson will come back to play on Monday, December 30 in the tournament. 
  • The Mustangs will return to home action on Monday, January 6 as they host Goucher at 6 p.m. at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
