Christopher Newport Pulls Away From Mustangs in Home Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's basketball hosted previously ranked No. 17 Christopher Newport on Sunday, December 1 for it's home opener. The Mustangs fell to the Captains 73-48. 

  • An Olivia Coleman opened the game with a made layup at the 2:14 mark. 
  • Stevenson (2-3) held the lead for the first five minutes of the game, Natalie Teriwilliger posted a layup for the Captains (6-3) at the 5:28 mark.
  • With 27 seconds left in the first quarter, two Hannah Crist free throws place the Mustangs 6-15.

  • The Captains held the Mustangs scoreless for the first three minutes of the quarter, a Savana Herndon free throw at the 6:52 mark closed the Captains six point run.
  • Sondra Fan completed two sets of free throws for the Captains, putting four points on the board at the 3:39 and 2:40 marks, respectively.
  • With 17 seconds left in the first half, a Crist three puts Stevenson within 14 of Christopher Newport, 24-38 at the break.

  • One minute into play, opening the second half were Coleman and Crist layups at the 9:17 and 8:54 marks.
  • Christopher Newport left the Mustangs scoreless following a Jovia Winkey layup at the 2:43 mark.
  • With one second left in the quarter, Lydia Crist blocked a shot taken by the Captains, ending the quarter 33-57.

  • A Kellie Johnson and Karleigh Leo threes in the first five minutes push the Mustangs within 30 of the Captains.
  • Off a rebound at the 2:39 mark, Laila Abdul-Rahman posted a layup and a free throw for the hosts. 
  • Christopher Newport maintained its lead, Bailey Mathias and Abdul-Rahman capped the game each with a layup, with 54 second left put Stevenson down 50-73.

  • Christopher Newport narrowly outshot Stevenson in three point shots, the Mustangs shooting 26.7% and the Captains shooting 27.3%.
  • Stevenson shot 34.5% overall.
  • The hosts took 14 more trips to the free throw line and was 13-18, while the Captains were 6-11.
  • Stevenson had 38 turnovers, while Christopher Newport had 25 giveaways.

  • Coleman finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds.

  • The Mustangs travel to No. 19 Messiah on Wednesday, Decemeber 4 for an 8 p.m. contest at the Jordan Court in the Hitchcock Arena. 
  • Stevenson will open MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday, December 7 at 1 p.m. hosting Lycoming in the Owings Mills Gymnasium.
