Gray Nets Two Power Play Goals in Mustangs 6-3 Victory Over Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Stevenson men's ice hockey senior Nick Gray netted two power play goals while the Mustangs netted two power play goals en route to a 6-3 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over Chatham Friday evening at Frozen Pond Arena.

  • The Cougars (0-3, 0-1 UCHC) recorded the first shot of the game before the visitors recording the next five by five different players.
  • Chatham struck first netting a goal just 5:20 into the contest after a turnover in the neutral zone.
  • The Mustangs (2-0-0, 1-0-0 UCHC) had the first power play opportunity of the game at the 11:33 mark and recording six shot but all were saved by Matt Calas.
  • Stevenson went back on the power play with 4:38 remaining in the period but managed just one shot on net.
  • The Mustangs outshot the Cougars, 19-5 in the period.

  • Stevenson went on the power play just 1:50 into the period and needed just 23 seconds before Gray knotted the game at 1-1. Freshman Austin Master and sophomore Ryan Patrick picked up the assists.
  • The Cougars reclaimed the lead just 25 seconds later as Chad Bell netted his second goal of the game.
  • Gray scored his second power play goal of the game at the 9:16 mark, scoring 28 seconds into the man advantage.
  • Chatham had its first power play opportunity of the game at the 11:14 mark but the hosts managed just one shot that was saved by junior Dylan Schoen.
  • The Cougars went on the power play with 1:11 seconds remaining in the period.

  • Just 21 seconds into the period and with 28 seconds left on the power play, Chatham went ahead for the third time after the power play goal.
  • At the 8:09 mark and on a delayed penalty, junior Carl Lyden tied the game at 3-3.
  • The Mustangs then took a 4-3 lead on the power play as junior Aaron Murray scored on assists from Patrick and sophomore Luke Benitez.
  • With 2:48 remaining in regulation, the Cougars went on the power play before pulling the goalie with 2:42 remaining to give the hosts a 6-on-4.
  • But with 2:02 remaining, senior Dominic Brenza scored a shorthanded, empty net goal to push the Mustangs lead to 5-3.
  • Senior Jake McNamara added another empty net goal, scoring the length of the ice.

  • Stevenson outshot Chatham, 46-28, and won 43 of the 84 face-offs.
  • The Mustangs finished 3-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
  • It is the second multi-goal game for Gray, who netted a hat trick last season.
  • Patrick finished with three assists while Master had two.
  • Schoen finished with 26 saves.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, November 15 when the Mustangs host a UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest versus Wilkes. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
