Mustangs Set Program Record With Eight Goals in Win Over Lawrence

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey freshman Austin Master netted his first career goal while senior Dominic Brenza dished out a program record four assists as the Mustangs posted an 8-3 non-conference victory over Lawrence Saturday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • The Mustangs (7-1-0) were whistled for an early penalty before going down two players for 1:11.
  • After killing off the first penalty, the hosts scored a shorthanded goal as senior Colin Woods found Brenza for a breakaway.
  • Just 1:26 later, Stevenson scored another shorthanded goal in similar fashion with Brenza finding senior Christian Ripley for the score to make it 2-0.
  • At the 8:30 mark, the Vikings (3-7-1) were whistled for their first penalty and the Mustangs made them pay, scoring a power play goal just nine seconds into the man advantage.
  • Brenza fed the puck down low to junior Houston Wilson who backhanded the puck in front to Ripley who pushed the lead to 3-0.
  • Lawrence got on the board with 3:14 remaining in the period as Vincent Dekumbis scored on a rebound after Daniel Gysi fired a shot from the point.

  • Master netted his first career goal just 4:51 into the period as he had a breakaway and toe dragged around Alex Mosquera for the score. Woods recorded the assist.
  • With 12:06 remaining, junior Oleg Potemkin fired a shot off the crossbar after Wilson won the face-off back to him.
  • Wilson won the ensuing face-off back to Potemkin for a second time before Wilson buried the rebound off a shot by Potemkin to give the hosts a 5-1 lead.
  • With 6:00 minutes remaining the teams were called for matching roughing penalties before Mosquera was called for a tripping penalty 1:21 later giving the host a four-on-three power play.
  • On a delayed penalty, junior Dylan Schoen came off in favor of an extra skater giving the Mustangs a five-on-three advantage allowing Master to net his second of the game.
  • Ripley and Brenza each picked up assists and Ripley fed Master up top before the rookie sent to puck over the stick side of Mosquera.

  • Just 2:52 into the period Potemkin got in on the scoring as he tipped in the puck after Wilson sent it towards the net on a breakaway.
  • Lawrence got one back at the 7:40 mark and earned a power play after a tripping penalty but the Mustangs had a pair of blocked shots on the kill.
  • Wilson netted his second goal of the game with 4:13 remaining on assists from junior Carl Lyden and senior Tyler Slusarczyk.
  • The Knights netted a power play goal with 3.1 seconds remaining.

  • Stevenson outshot Lawrence, 41-18, and won 37 of the 71 face-offs.
  • The Mustangs finished 3-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.
  • The Mustangs five-game win streak set the new program record as the team had three separate four-game win streaks through the programs four seasons.
  • It is the first time in program history the Mustangs have scored two shorthanded goals in a game.
  • The eight goals sets a new program record after the team netted seven goals, four times.
  • It is also the fourth consecutive game Stevenson has scored at least five goals. The team has outscored its opponents, 25-9.
  • For Brenza, it is his fourth career game with at least three assists and second this season. He finished with one goal and four assists.
  • Wilson totaled two goals and two assists while Ripley had two goal and an assist.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, December 6 when the Mustangs host a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest versus 12th-ranked Utica beginning at 7:00 p.m.
