Mustangs Fall to Southern Virginia in Tight Fourth Quarter

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Stevenson women's basketball team fell to Southern Virginia 64-59 on day two of the Eastern Mennonite Invitational. The Mustangs came back to tie things in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 18 in the first half.

  • Southern Virginia (4-1) left Stevenson (2-1) scoreless for the first two minutes until a Hannah Crist three at the 7:59 and Brandi Hall three at the 7:27 mark that placed the two teams tied 6-6.
  • Following an Angel Tuisavura layup, the game remained still for almost three minutes before Morgan Pennick converted a layup at the 3:18 mark.
  • Two Stevenson layups by Laila Abdul-Rahman and Hall with less than two minutes to play place the Mustangs within three to the Knights, 15-12
  • The Knights ended the quarter with a layup from Courtney McKrola to go up 17-12 after one.

  • A three by Karleigh Leo opened the quarter for the Mustangs at the 9:52 mark.
  • Southern Virginia used an 18-2 run to open up a 35-17 lead 4:18 before intermission on a Savannah Christenson basket.
  • The Mustangs scored the next seven points ending in an Abdul-Rahman free throw with 1:09 left to play that made it 35-24.
  • Crist capped the first half with a made free throw to make it 39-28 at the break.

  • A Hall three opened the second half to pull the Mustangs within eight of the Knights.
  • Stevenson chipped away and pulled within four, 47-43, with just under four minutes remaining on a Kellie Johnson free throw.
  • The Knights led 52-45 after three.

  • A 6-2 from the Mustangs capped by a Johnson layup at the 7:55 mark placed Stevenson within three, 54-51
  • A basket by Coleman at the 4:53 mark put Stevenson within two of the Knights.
  • With 1:41 left to play, Pennick tied the game 59-59 with a pair of free throws.
  • Amanda Wood sank a three on SVU's next trip to put the Knights up 62-59.
  • After an empty trip by the Mustangs, another basket with 1:02 left extended Southern Virginia's lead to 64-59.
  • Stevenson had a shot attempt blocked, but the Mustangs controlled the offensive rebound, however, turned it over with 17 seconds left.

  • Stevenson shot 31.1% overall while Southern Virginia shot 39.3%.
  • The Mustangs took 12 more trips to the free throw line and were 16-28, while the Knights went 9-14 at the stripe.
  • Both teams grabbed 41 rebounds.
  • Hall totaled 16 points for the Mustangs and grabbed nine rebounds.
  • Olivia Coleman and Crist each tallied nine points and six rebounds.
  • Pennick added eight points.
  • Stevenson finished with 13 steals, with Crist and Savana Herndon each registering three.

  • Stevenson travels to Marymount (Va.) on Tuesday, November 26 for a 6 p.m. match-up.
  • The Mustangs host No. 15 Christopher Newport on Sunday, December 1 at 4 p.m. for their home opener.
