Three Third Period Goals Lifts Mustangs Over Alvernia

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Jordan Pirrello scored the game-winning goal with 2:07 remaining as the Mustangs scored three third period goals en route to a 3-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory over Alvernia Friday night at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • After a back and forth start to the game, the Golden Wolves (2-5-0, 0-2-0 UCHC) earned the game's first power play but did not record a shot on net.
  • Sophomore Nikki Kendrick recorded a blocked shot on the penalty kill.
  • Over a two-minute span, the Mustangs (4-2-1, 3-2-0 UCHC) fired six shots at Julia Beaven but the goalkeeper kept all six shots in front of her.
  • With 2:12 remaining in the period, the hosts went on its first power play, yet Beaven stopped all three shots.

  • Just 2:30 into the period, the Mustangs went back on the power play but the lone shot by freshman Ashlyn Bray was stopped.
  • Stevenson outshot Alvernia, 7-1 in the period.

  • Stevenson had a five-on-three power play advantage early in the period and made it count as sophomore Tea Ferrara put a rebound into the back of the net off a shot from senior Allyson Barlow.
  • Sophomore Ally Gibson picked up the secondary assist after feeding the puck to Barlow at the point.
  • Just 38 seconds later, the Mustangs had another five-on-three power play, recording just one shot on net during the 43 seconds.
  • With 3:40 remaining, Alvernia tied the game at 1-1, scoring with 21 seconds remaining on the power play.
  • The Mustangs answered 1:33 later as Pirrello fired a shot off the post and in. Sophomore Kendall Miller picked up her first point of the season with the assist.
  • The Golden Wolves went with an empty net with 1:31 remaining in regulation before freshman Karly Aguirre scored on the empty net with 37.4 seconds left.

  • Stevenson outshot Alvernia, 43-8, including 21-4 in the third period.
  • The Mustangs improve to 39-3-2 all-time when recording at least 40 shots.
  • The hosts dominiated at the face-off dot, winning 41 of the 52 face-offs. Ferrara won 15 of her 18.
  • The Mustangs finished 1-for-6 on the power play, netting their fifth power play goal of the season, all on home ice.
  • Pirrello has four goals in her last two games and five points in her last three.
  • It is the third consecutive game for Barlow with an assist. Meanwhile, Gibson is riding a four-game point streak.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 30 when the Mustangs face Bowdoin in the 13th Annual Codfish Bowl hosted by UMass Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs return home on Saturday, December 7 when the team hosts a non-conference contest versus Endicott beginning at 7:00 p.m.
