Mustangs Open Season With Conference Victory Over King's (Pa.)

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - The Stevenson men's ice hockey team had eight different players record a point as the Mustangs erased an early deficit to post a 3-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory over King's (Pa.) Saturday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Just 1:06 into the contest, Liam Johnson put the visitors on the board after collecting on a turnover and scoring from behind the net.
  • The Mustangs (1-0-0, 1-0-0 UCHC) recorded the next three shots before going on the game's first power play at the 4:30 mark.
  • Stevenson totaled two shots on the man advantage before it was cut short by a tripping penalty.
  • Two seconds after the Mustangs penalty expired, they were sent back to the box after a too many on the ice was called.
  • For the second consecutive time, the Monarchs (0-1-0, 0-1-0 UCHC) did not record a shot on the power play.
  • With 3:51 remaining in the period, junior Houston Wilson tied the game at 1-1 after beating goalkeeper Brandon Daigle inside the near post. Sophomore Oleg Potemkin took a turnover in the neutral zone before sending it across to Wilson at the blue line.
  • The hosts had a power play to end the period, putting four shots on net on the advantage.

  • The Mustangs controlled the early part of the period, recording the first five shots, before being whistled for a penalty.
  • King's once again did not record a shot on the man advantage.
  • Midway through the period, junior Aaron Murray gave Stevenson a 2-1 advantage after netting a four-on-three goal. Sophomore Ryan Patrick fed the puck down low to senior Nick Gray who found Murray at the point.
  • The Mustangs had another four-on-three power play for 14 seconds before recording a pair of shots on the five-on-four power play.

  • Just 1:41 into the period, the Mustangs were sent to the box, but junior Dylan Schoen came up with a pair of saves while both seniors Jake McNamara and Bruce Stachitas had a blocked shot.
  • At the 9:55 mark, sophomore Chad Watt pushed the hosts lead to 3-1 after deflecting a shot down and in off a shot by junior Martino Picariello from the points. Sophomore Luke Benitez picked up the secondary assist.

  • Stevenson outshot King's, 38-11, including 30-5 in the first two periods.
  • The Mustangs were 1-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
  • The hosts also won 44 of the 71 face-offs, with Benitez winning 12 of his 16.
  • Schoen finished with 10 saves in his first career start with the Mustangs.
  • Picariello finished with a team-high two blocked shots.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, November 8 when the Mustangs travel to Chatham for a UCHC contest beginning at 7:10 p.m.
