Mustangs Open Season with Win Over York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team opened its 2019-2020 campaign with a 63-54 win over York (Pa.) Tuesday night at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.  Junior Brandi Hall finished one shy of her career-high with 17 points.

  • A layup by Olivia Coleman 2:34 into the game gave Stevenson (1-0) its first lead, 7-5.
  • The Mustangs extended the lead to 13-7 lead five minutes into the game following back-to-back baskets by Morgan Pennick and Hall.
  • The Spartans (0-2) finished the quarter with the final seven points of the period to pull within one, 15-14.

  • With the game tied 16-16, seven straight points capped by a Kirstin Huggins layup gave the Mustangs a 23-16 lead at the 6:50 mark.
  • A Lindsay Brown three capped a 7-0 spurt for the Spartans to tie the game 23-23 with 4:32 left before halftime.
  • Two free throws by Savana Herndon 10 seconds later put the Mustangs back in front.
  • Stevenson closed the half on a 10-2 run and a three by Hannah Crist with 25 seconds left put Stevenson up eight, 33-25, at the break.

  • Stevenson opened the second half with seven points in the first five minutes, until the Spartans ran off eight consecutive points to tie the game 40-40 with 1:41 left in the third.
  • A turnover by Hall with 1:08 left allowed put Stevenson back in front, 42-40.
  • With 37 seconds left in the quarter, Herndon tied the game 43-43 on a free throw.
  • Stevenson took a 45-43 lead heading into the final quarter on a basket by Laila Abdul-Rahman.

  • Stevenson held the Spartans scoreless for the first 5:27 of the fourth quarter and built a 51-43 lead.
  • A basket by Pennick, followed by a Coleman basket with just under three minutes left, put the guests up 11, 55-44.
  • York got the lead down to seven twice, the last on a Haley Luckabaugh three with 16 seconds left, but got no closer.

  • Stevenson shot 46.2 % overall but was just 3-16 behind the arc.
  • The Mustangs held the Spartans to 26.3% shooting for the game, including 5-29 behind the arc.
  • The guests took eight more trips to the free throw line and was 12-21, while the Spartans went 7-13 at the line.
  • Stevenson was able to overcome 28 turnovers, while York had 10 giveaways.
  • The Mustangs outrebounded the Spartans 55-40.
  • Hall and Coleman each finished 6-10 from the floor for the Mustangs, with Hall going 2-3 behind the arc.
  • Coleman finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds, matching her career high in boards.
  • Pennick tallied 10 points and three assists in her collegiate debut, while Crist contributed seven points, five rebounds and five assists
  • Coleman led in 15 rebounds for Stevenson.

  • The Mustangs will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for the Eastern Mennonite tournament November 22 and 23. On Friday, November 22 the Mustangs face Apprentice School at 7:30 p.m. and Southern Virginia on Saturday, November 23 at 1 p.m.
  • Stevenson will host No. 15 Christopher Newport in its home opener on Sunday, December 1 at 4:00 p.m.
