Gibson Nets First Career Goal in Overtime Loss at Manhattanville

RYE, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey sophomore Ally Gibson netted her first career goal, but Manhattanville netted a third period power play goal before scoring 1:15 into overtime to escape with a 2-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) overtime victory Sunday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino.

  • The Valiants (2-1-1, 2-0-0 UCHC) recorded the first two shots of the game before taking the game's first penalty at the 6:38 mark.
  • Stevenson managed just two shots on net during the player advantage.
  • Senior Annie Smyth-Hammond stopped all nine shots she faced in the opening period while the Mustangs (1-2-1, 0-2-0 UCHC) recorded just four.

  • The visitors had three shots to start the period, as freshman KaliJo Zagula put a shot on net while another two Stevenson shots were blocked.
  • At the 3:19 mark, Gibson gave the Mustangs the lead as she scored on a rebound off a shot from senior Rachel Grewette. Sophomore Nikki Kendrick picked up the secondary assist.
  • Stevenson went on the power play for the second time at the 4:13 mark, but saw both its shots blocked in front.

  • Smyth-Hammond had a pair of early saves in the period before the defense had four straight blocked shots, including a pair by Kendrick.
  • The Mustangs went on another power play and recorded three shots but all were stopped by Taylor Ham.
  • At the 8:02 mark, the Valiants went on their first power play but saw three shots stopped by Smyth-Hammond before having a two player advantage for 45 seconds.
  • Smyth-Hammond made two stops on the five-on-three advantage for Manhattanville before the hosts scored on the remainder of the second penalty.
  • Stevenson had a power play opportunity with 3:29 remaining in regulation yet the Valiants had just as many shots, two, on the penalty kill.

  • Manhattanville scored 1:15 into the extra period as the Valiants had a three-on-one rush as a flip out of the defensive zone.

  • Manhattanville outshot Stevenson, 33-22, and won 27 of the 45 face-offs.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-4 on the power play whil the Valiants were 1-for-2.
  • Smyth-Hammond finished with 31 saves while both Kendrick and junior Kira Collins had four blocked shots each.
  • The overtime loss is the first is program history after going unbeaten in the first 21 overtime games.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, November 15 when the Mustangs host a UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest versus Lebanon Valley. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
