Mustangs Stop Scranton in Regular Season Finale

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Host Stevenson University closed out the regular season with a 3-1 non-conference women's volleyball win over the University of Scranton Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Set scores were 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15.

  • Stevenson (27-2) jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set.
  • The Royals (14-16) scored four straight to pull within 10-9.
  • A 6-2 run capped by a Darian Hileman service ace put the Mustangs up 16-11.
  • Scranton countered with five straight points to tie the set 16-16.
  • With Kayla Vaeth serving, the hosts recorded seven straight points and took a 23-16 lead on a service ace.
  • The Royals chipped away and pulled within two, 24-22, but an attack error closed out the set.

  • After the two teams forged nine ties, three straight points by the Mustangs capped by a Katie Leftridge kill put Stevenson on top 13-10.
  • Scranton reeled off five consecutive points to take a 17-14 lead on a service ace.
  • The Mustangs cut the lead to two twice, but got no closer, and a Mustang ball handling error closed the set and tied the match 1-1.

  • Scranton jumped out to an early 5-1 lead.
  • The Mustangs took their first lead of the set, 11-10, on a Royal attack error after a Victoria Prokic kill tied the set 10-10.
  • Clinging to a 17-16 lead, Stevenson scored five straight points and a Prokic kill put the hosts up 22-16.
  • The visitors scored the next two points, but three straight points capped by a Vaeth service ace put the Mustangs up 2-1.

  • After Scranton had the first two points, Stevenson reeled off six in a row to take a 6-2 lead after a Royal ball handling error.
  • With Leftridge serving, a 7-0 run extended Stevenson's lead to 14-5. Leftridge had a kill and an ace during the run.
  • The Royals never got closer than six points the rest of the way, and a Leftridge kill ended things.
  • Stevenson hit .370 in the final set while limiting the guests to -.031 hitting.

  • The Mustangs hit .236 for the match, while the Royals hit .115.
  • Leftridge finished with 12 kills and nine digs.
  • Prokic tallied nine kills and five blocks, while Shannon Baily had eight kills and a pair of blocks.
  • Vaeth registered 12 digs and four aces.
  • Julie Nightwine finished with 22 assists and now sits just eight shy of 2,000 for her career.
  • Caroline Dangel tallied 13 assists and eight digs.

  • Stevenson is the top seed in next week's MAC Commonwealth Championship and will host a semifinal on Wednesday, November 6 at 7 pm at Owings Mills Gym.
  • The Mustangs will face either No. 4 Lycoming or No. 5 Lebanon Valley, who meet in a first-round matchup Monday night.
