Mustangs Match Best-Ever Start, Sweep Widener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team remained unbeaten with a 3-0 win against Widener Tuesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-20, 25-17, 25-22.

  • Widener (7-16, 2-3 MAC Commonwealth) started the match with a 6-1 lead on the Mustangs (23-0, 5-0 MAC Commonwealth), but back-to-back kills by senior Katie Leftridge put the Mustangs up 8-7 following a 7-1 run by the hosts.
  • The Pride tied the set 18-18 following a Mustang setting error.
  • Stevenson closed the set 25-20 with a kill from freshman Shannon Baily.
  • The Mustangs hit .171 in the first set while the Pride hit .093. 

  • The Mustangs and Pride went back and forth for five points until Stevenson pulled ahead with three straight points to take an 8-5 lead 
  • With Darian Hileman serving, Stevenson had six straight points, and a block by Blevins and Victoria Prokic put Stevenson up 16-7.
  • Mustangs closed out the set with a kill from freshman Taylor Jones
  • Stevenson hit .263 while Widener hit .105.

  • Stevenson broke open the third with an 8-0 run with Leftridge serving to go up 13-8.
  • The Pride, trailing 24-14, rattled off eight straight points to pull within 24-22 on a block by Claire Kauffman and Shelby Motz.
  • A kill by Lauryn Davis closed things out.

  • Stevenson matched its best-ever start, as the 2013 Mustangs won their first 23 matches.
  • At 23-0 the Mustangs remain one of three unbeaten teams in the nation, along with Johns Hopkins and Tufts.
  • Stevenson has won 19 in a row at home.
  • Stevenson out hit Widener .157 to .100.
  • Blevins finished with eight kills, while Baily had seven and Simone Gest six.
  • Nightwine and Blevins each registered 13 assists.
  • Kayla Vaeth led the Mustangs defensively with 13 digs.
  • Stevenson racked up 13 service aces on the night, with Hileman recording four.
  • 17 of 18 Stevenson players saw the floor in the match.

  • The Mustangs return to action to take on No. 9 Johns Hopkins at the Owings Mills Gymnasium on Thursday October, 17 at 7 p.m. in a matchup of two of the remaining three unbeaten teams in Division III.
