Mustangs Earn First Conference Win at Alvernia

READING, Pa. - Visiting Stevenson University placed four players in double figures as it downed Alvernia 77-49 in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball Thursday evening at McCloskey Court.

  • The game saw three ties before Alvernia (3-11, 0-5 MAC Commonwealth) forged a 13-8 lead with 2:27 to go in the quarter.
  • Stevenson (5-8, 1-4 MAC Commonwealth) closed the quarter on a 10-2 run and two free throws by Brandi Hall with five seconds left gave the guests an 18-15 lead after one.

  • The Mustangs opened the quarter on an 8-1 run and a Kellie Johnson free throw at the 5:46 mark put them up 10, 26-16.
  • Alvernia got its first field goal in nearly eight minutes with 3:40 left before halftime, pulling within six, 26-20.
  • A 6-2 spurt capped by a three-point play by Jonyae Curry pushed Stevenson's lead back to 10, 32-22, with 1:05 remaining.
  • The Golden Wolves pulled within six, 33-27, at intermission.

  • Stevenson held the hosts without a field goal for nearly the first six minutes of the half, using a 14-1 run to open a 47-28 lead on a Hannah Crist basket with 4:30 left in the quarter.
  • The Mustangs extended the run to 22-4 and an Alexa Sanmartin free throw with 3:03 to go made it a 55-33 game.
  • A Denia Campbell layup with 1:29 left gave Stevenson a 61-35 lead and it went into the final frame up 61-39.

  • Alvernia pulled within 20 19 seconds into the quarter, but the Mustangs did not allow the Golden Wolves to get closer.
  • Stevenson took its largest lead, 77-47, with 2:03 remaining on a Laila Abdul-Rahman basket.

  • Stevenson has won 12 straight against Alvernia.
  • The Mustangs shot 42.1% while holding the Golden Wolves to 27.6% shooting, including 3-22 behind the arc.
  • The guests took 14 more trips to the free throw line, going 23-33, while Alvernia was 14-19.
  • Alvernia held a 43-40 rebounding advantage.
  • The Mustangs forced 34 Alvernia turnovers but had 25 of its own.
  • Curry totaled 17 points to lead four Mustangs in double figures, while she also had seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
  • Johnson registered her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while also making five steals.
  • Crist and Campbell each tallied 13 points.

  • Stevenson returns to action Monday, January 7, when it hosts Stockton in its final non-conference game of the season.  The game is slated for a 7 pm tip.
