Mustangs Place Five In Double Figures to Move Past Arcadia

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson placed five players in double figures and opened the second half on a 12-0 run to post a 78-63 win over Arcadia in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The Mustangs extended their winning streak to a season-high four games.

  • Stevenson (10-9, 5-5 MAC Commonwealth) opened up a 9-3 lead just over three minutes into the game after two Olivia Coleman free throws.
  • Arcadia (7-12, 4-6 MAC Commonwealth) scored the next seven points to take a 10-9 lead with 3:53 on the clock.
  • After the lead changed hands five times, two free throws by Jonyae Curry with 25 seconds left in the first put the Mustangs up 17-16 after one.

  • With the game tied 22-22, five straight points capped by Alexa Sanmartin's three at the 7:12 mark gave the hosts a 27-22 lead.
  • The Knights reclaimed the lead with a Camille Menns basket to cap a 8-2 run that made it 30-29 with 5:59 remaining in the first half.
  • After five lead changes, a three by Hannah Crist with just under four minutes left kicked off a 10-2 Stevenson run to close the half and make it 43-36 at intermission.

  • Stevenson held Arcadia scoreless for the first 5:32 of the second half, opening on a 12-0 run to build a 55-36 lead on a Denia Campbell free throw.
  • The guests scored seven straight points to cut the lead to 12, 55-43, on a Taylor Dunn basket at the 2:28 mark.
  • The Mustangs countered with a 6-0 spurt and two Curry free throws made it a 61-43 game with 1:22 left in the quarter.
  • Stevenson took a 64-48 lead into the final 10 minutes.

  • Arcadia scored the first six points of the final frame to shrink the lead to 10, 64-54, with 8:12 to play.
  • The Knights pulled within nine and made it a 70-61 game on a Taylor Fritz three with 3:37 left.
  • Leading 72-63, Stevenson scored the final six points of the game, with a Campbell conventional three-point play and a three by Brandi Hall accounting for the scoring.

  • The game featured four ties and 16 lead changes.
  • Stevenson shot 47.5% overall but knocked down seven of its 12 three-point attempts (58.3%) for a season-high shooting percentage behind the arc.  The Mustangs also took 12 more trips to the free throw line, going 17-22, while Arcadia was 8-10 at the stripe.
  • The Knights, who held a 33-30 rebound advantage, shot 44.6% on the afternoon and were 5-13 from long range.
  • Curry finished 6-9 from the floor and 8-8 at the free throw line en route to 20 points to lead five players with at least 10 points for the hosts.  She also grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Curry scored at least 20 points for the fourth consecutive game, averaging 23.5 ppg over that span.
  • Crist drilled four three-pointers and tallied 16 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
  • Campbell finished with 14 points and six assists, while Coleman contributed 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
  • Hall added 11 points on 4-6 shooting.
  • Stevenson has won six of seven since the calendar turned to 2019.

  • Stevenson travels to league-leading and No. 8 Messiah for a 6 pm contest on Wednesday, January 30.
  • The next Mustang home game is Wednesday, February 6, when Stevenson welcomes Lebanon Valley for a 6 pm game at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Jonyae Curry was honored for scoring her 1,000th career point Wednesday prior to Saturday's game.
