No. 15 Blue Jays Remain Unbeaten, Sweep Mustangs

BALTIMORE - No. 15 Johns Hopkins remained undefeated as it posted a 3-0 win over Stevenson in non-conference women's volleyball Thursday night at Goldfarb Gym.  Set scores were 25-14, 25-21, 25-16.

  • The first set was tied 6-6 when Johns Hopkins (12-0) used an 11-2 run to open up a 17-8 lead after back-to-back setting errors by the Mustangs.
  • A kill by junior Victoria Prokic ended the Blue Jay run.
  • Stevenson (10-7) used a 5-1 spurt to pull within 24-14, but a kill by Micaelle Larrieux ended the frame.
  • Johns Hopkins hit .294 in the opening frame while the Mustangs hit .129.

  • Stevenson held a 10-7 lead following a kill by junior Darian Hileman before the Blue Jays rattled off seven straight points to take a 14-10 lead.
  • The Mustangs recorded the next three points to pull within one after back-to-back Hileman kills.
  • After Hopkins extended the lead to 20-16, Stevenson used six straight points to pull within one, 20-19.
  • Stevenson cut the lead to two twice, the last time at 23-21, but back-to-back Larrieux kills gave the hosts a 2-0 lead.

  • Johns Hopkins took control early, building leads of 10-4 and 15-7.
  • Stevenson chipped away and got the lead down to five, 20-15, on a block by senior Chelsea Ireland and freshman Mackenzie Blevins, but the Blue Jays responded with four straight points to go up 24-15.
  • After a Blevins kill, a Mustang service error closed out the match.

  • Stevenson saw a four-match win streak snapped.
  • Johns Hopkins hit .232 for the match while the Mustangs were held to .095 hitting, its third-lowest percentage of the season.  Stevenson had hit at least .200 in its last nine matches prior to tonight.
  • The Blue Jays had eight service aces and 11 blocks, while the Mustangs finished with a pair of aces and six blocks.
  • Hileman led Stevenson with 10 kills, her second-highest total of the season.
  • Blevins finished with five kills and four blocks, while senior Moriah Savage also had five kills.
  • Ireland finished with five blocks on the evening.
  • Sophomore Sarah Riggin notched 14 digs, while junior Katie Leftridge added 11.
  • Junior Caroline Dangel handed out 17 assists.
  • Thursday's match was a rematch of last season's second-round NCAA match won by the Blue Jays by a 3-1 final.

  • Stevenson travels to St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday for a tri-match, facing York (Pa.) at 2:00 pm before facing the host Seahawks at 4:00 pm.
  • The Mustangs return home on Wednesday, October 3 when they host Marymount (Va.) in a 7:00 contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
