Mustangs Prevail in Conference Championship Rematch

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - In a rematch of last season's MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball championship match, Stevenson University downed Arcadia University 3-1 Tuesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23.

  • Stevenson (10-6, 5-0 MAC Commonwealth) reeled off seven straight points as a 5-5 tie became a 12-5 lead with junior Darian Hileman serving. A Hileman service ace capped the run.
  • Trailing 19-13, Arcadia (10-4, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) used a 5-1 run to pull within one, 20-19.  A kill by freshman Mackenzie Blevins ended the run.
  • The visitors cut the lead to one one more time but never tied the set.
  • Moriah Savage closed out the frame with her second kill of the match.
  • Katie Leftridge finished with four kills, while Blevins and junior Victoria Prokic each recording three.
  • Both teams hit well, with the Mustangs hitting .306 and Arcadia .250.

  • Arcadia jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second set.
  • Stevenson trailed 17-10 when it scored the next four points to close within three on a kill by Chelsea Ireland.
  • After the Knights reclaimed a five-point lead, 20-15, Stevenson chipped away and got within 21-19 on a Savage kill, but Arcadia responded with the next three points and tied the match on a Mustang service error. 

  • The third set saw seven ties before a 4-1 run allowed the Mustangs to eke out an 11-8 lead on a Blevins service ace.
  • Leading 16-14, the Mustangs, with Hileman serving, scored six straight points to go up 22-14.  Leftridge had three kills during the run.
  • A Prokic kill wrapped up the frame and a 2-1 Mustang lead.

  • Arcadia took an early 6-2 lead before four straight points tied the match 6-6.
  • The Knights scored the next three points to go up 9-6 before a 4-1 Mustang run tied things at 10 on an attack error by the guests.
  • From there, it was a one-point set until Stevenson's 5-1 run gave it a 19-15 lead on an Ireland kill, forcing the Knights to call timeout.
  • Arcadia scored three straight points to pull within one, 19-18, and cut the lead to one two more times, the last at 23-22.
  • A Savage kill after a long rally put the Mustangs up by a pair, and a kill by Prokic ended things.

  • Stevenson improved to 53-0 all-time in MAC Commonwealth regular season play.
  • The Mustangs hit .212 as a team, while Arcadia hit .157.
  • Leftridge had a match-high 17 kills and also contributed five digs.
  • Blevins had a career-best 11 kills and hit .375 with two errors on 24 attempts.
  • Four other players had between six and nine kills, with Prokic finishing with nine, Savage with eight, and Ireland and Hileman with six apiece.
  • Ireland also had six blocks (one solo).
  • Hileman was one of four Mustangs to finish with double-digit digs as she recorded 21.
  • Junior setters Caroline Dangel and Julie Nightwine each finished with double-doubles, with Dangel recording 24 assists and 10 digs.  Nightwine recorded 21 assists and 13 digs.
  • Sophomore libero Sarah Riggin posted 15 digs.
  • Stevenson's 74 digs as a team were its most in a four-set match this season.
  • The last three meetings with Arcadia have seen Stevenson win by 3-1 scores.
  • Lauren Enfield paced Arcadia with 13 kills.

Moriah Savage comes up with a big kill for Stevenson's 24th point in the fourth set following a long rally.

  • Stevenson returns to action Thursday night when it travels to 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins for a 7:00 non-conference contest.
  • The Mustangs are back home on Wednesday, October 3, when they host Marymount (Va.) in a 7:00 match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
