Mustangs Blanked by #13 Rowan in Non-Conference Action

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson field hockey team was held to a season-low four shots as the 13th-ranked Rowan University Profs used a six-goal outburst in the opening half to shutout the Mustangs by a final of 6-0 on Tuesday night at Mustang Stadium in non-conference play.

  • Rowan (6-0) struck just 7:14 into the contest when Rachel Galante took a pass from teammate Krystyna Hovell and found herself free all alone in front of Stevenson (3-4) junior goalie Kelsey Eure slipping her shot under the pads to make it 1-0.
  • Hovell then added onto the visitors lead in the 12th-minute putting home a tap-in on the goal line off the feed from Bridget Guinan.  Then in the 15th-minute it was Hovell taking a rebound off Eure and putting it away extending the guests lead to 3-0.
  • Liz Fox and Galante scored just 45-seconds apart in minute 24 pushing it to 5-0.
  • The Mustangs recorded their first shot of the game at the 26:49 mark when senior Marissa Hoffman forced a save out of Profs keeper Morgan Novak.  Two minutes later with the home side playing a man-up sophomore Brigid Saroch made Novak make her second stop of the half.
  • Julie Johnson found the back of the net with three minutes to remaining to extend the Rowan lead.

  • The second half started strong for the Profs as they recorded the first six shots of the frame causing Eure to make three saves during the push.
  • In the 58th-minute after a home foul in the attack area, Rowan was awarded a penalty stroke, but the attempt from Galante went wide of the cage.
  • With ten minutes to play shots from senior Sara McVey and Saroch both missed the goal keeping the shutout intact.
  • The Mustangs appeared to break up the clean sheet in the final minute as McVey worked her way into the attack zone and slipped a shot past the Profs keeper.  Unfortunately, for Stevenson McVey was called for a foul and issued a green card canceling out the goal.

  • Rowan held significant edges in shots 22-4 and penalty corners 16-2.
  • Eure made seven saves on the night giving her 37 for the season.
  • Saroch led the way for Stevenson with two shots, while McVey and Hoffman each chipped in one.

  • The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, September 22 when they travel to Reading, Pa. to battle Alvernia University in the MAC Commonwealth opener at 4pm.
