Women's Volleyball Splits Home Trimatch

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team split a tri-match at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday, sweeping Rutgers-Camden 3-0 before dropping a 3-1 decision to Eastern.

  • Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-12.
  • Stevenson (6-6) hit .233 as a team, including .316 in the third set, while holding the Scarlet Raptors (2-6) to .010 hitting, including -.133 in the final frame.
  • Senior Moriah Savage led the Mustangs with seven kills and two blocks, while classmate Chelsea Ireland had five kills and four blocks.  Ireland hit .444 with one error on nine swings.
  • Junior Darian Hileman recorded five kills and eight digs.
  • Sophomore Sarah Riggin totaled 13 digs.
  • Junior Emily Castro notched 10 assists, with classmate Caroline Dangel adding eight.
  • 16 players saw action for Stevenson.

  • Set scores were 25-21, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23.
  • In the first set, Stevenson trailed 19-12 before chipping away and getting the Eastern (9-2) lead down to 23-20 following a kill by Katie Leftridge.
  • The third set was tied 6-6 before four straight points, including back-to-back Leftridge kills, pushed the Mustangs in front 10-6.  Another 5-0 run took a 16-12 lead to 21-12, including a pair of Savage kills.
  • Stevenson trailed 17-12 in the fourth set before four straight points made it a one-point set and forced the Eagles to call timeout.
  • The Mustangs were serving down 24-23 when a Sammy Rogers kill sealed the match for Eastern.
  • The two teams hit nearly identical, with Stevenson hitting .224 and Eastern .223.
  • Leftridge racked up 19 kills and 27 digs in the nightcap, while Hileman added 12 kills and 15 digs.
  • Victoria Prokic hit .588 and finished with 11 kills and four blocks.
  • Dangel and Julie Nightwine each finished with 24 assists.
  • Riggin registered 18 digs.
  • The Mustangs were hurt by 13 service errors.

  • Eastern has won 10 consecutive MAC Freedom championships, while Stevenson has won the last six MAC Commonwealth crowns.
  • Leftridge's double-double against the Eagles was her fifth of the season.  Her 27 digs were a career high.
  • Hileman's 12 kills were her career best.
  • Stevenson had won four in a row before the setback to Eastern.

  • Stevenson returns to MAC Commonwealth action Wednesday night when it travels to Lebanon Valley for a 7 pm contest.
  • The Mustangs host a tri-match at Owings Mills Gymnasium next Saturday, facing Lycoming in a 1 pm conference match before battling Washington (Md.) College at 5 pm.
