Mustangs Ground Messiah For 50th Straight Conference Win

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team downed Messiah College 3-1 Tuesday night at Jordan Court for its 50th straight MAC Commonwealth regular season victory.  Set scores were 27-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21.

  • Stevenson (5-5, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) trailed 18-12 before using a 5-1 run to pull within two, 19-17, on a block by junior Victoria Prokic and freshman Mackenzie Blevins.
  • Down 24-21 and with Messiah (6-2, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) serving for set point, a service error gave serve back to the Mustangs.  Back-to-back attack errors and a block by senior Chelsea Ireland and junior Katie Leftridge put the Mustangs up 25-24.
  • After a Falcon kill, back-to-back attack errors by Messiah won the match for Stevenson.
  • Stevenson hit .310 in the first set and took advantage of nine Falcon attack errors as the hosts hit .200.

  • Stevenson jumped out to an 11-5 lead following back-to-back kills by Blevins.
  • After the Mustangs went up 17-10 on a kill by junior Caroline Dangel, Messiah reeled off four straight points to make it 17-14.
  • The Falcons got no closer and a Prokic kill put the Mustangs up 2-0.

  • After eight ties, three straight points by Messiah put the Falcons up 17-14.
  • Stevenson cut the lead to two twice, the last time at 20-18, but a 4-0 Falcon run made it 24-18.  A Prokic kill and a Messiah attack error pulled Stevenson within four, 24-20, but a Messiah kill forced a fourth set.

  • Stevenson jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the frame following a kill by senior Moriah Savage.
  • With the Mustangs leading 15-7, Messiah rattled off six straight points and back-to-back aces pulled the Falcons within two, 15-13.
  • A Leftridge kill ended the Messiah run and Stevenson scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 22-16 lead on a Prokic kill.
  • A Messiah attack error closed out the match.

  • Stevenson is 50-0 all-time in MAC Commonwealth regular season play and 62-0 including the MAC Commonwealth tournament.
  • The Mustangs and Falcons met in the MAC Commonwealth final each year from 2012-16.
  • Stevenson hit .257 as a team while the Falcons hit .148 with 26 attack errors.
  • The Mustangs finished with seven blocks as a team.
  • Leftridge finished with 14 kills and eight digs while Savage hit .385 and finished with 12.
  • Prokic had 10 kills and no errors on 16 attempts for a .625 hitting percentage and also recorded five blocks.
  • Sophomore Sarah Riggin tallied 20 digs.
  • Dangel handed out 26 assists, while junior Julie Nightwine recorded 14 assists and 14 digs.

  • Stevenson hosts a tri-match on Saturday, September 15, facing Rutgers-Camden at noon and Eastern at 4 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
