No. 24 Mustangs Battle Muhlenberg, No. 23 Christopher Newport Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The No. 24 Stevenson University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport Saturday.  The Mustangs fell 3-1 to Muhlenberg, then fell 3-2 to the host and 23rd-ranked Captains.

  • Set scores were 26-24, 25-18, 21-25, 25-23.
  • In the first set Stevenson (1-3) trailed 23-20 before using a 4-1 run capped by a kill by junior Katie Leftridge to tie things at 24.  A kill and a Mustang attack error gave the Mules (3-0) the first set.
  • Stevenson held an early 12-7 lead in the third set before five straight Muhlenberg points tied it 12-12.  There would be two more ties before Stevenson closed the set on a 5-1 run capped by a block by senior Moriah Savage and junior Victoria Prokic.
  • The Mustangs trailed 14-8 in the fourth before a 7-1 spurt tied the set 15-15. The set was tied 22-all on a kill by junior Darian Hileman before the Mules recorded a kill and an ace.  A Prokic kill made it 24-23, but a Muhlenberg kill ended things.
  • Stevenson hit .182 in the match while the Mules hit .199 as a team.
  • Leftridge finished with 10 kills and 16 digs, while Prokic and Savage each added nine.  Prokic recorded three blocks and Savage two.
  • Senior Chelsea Ireland posted eight kills on .538 hitting, six digs and two blocks.
  • Hileman recorded six kills, 10 digs and four service aces.
  • Junior Caroline Dangel handed out 20 assists.

  • Christopher Newport rallied from 2-1 down to prevail 15-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 16-14.
  • The Captains (3-1) hit .314 for the match, including .457 over the final two sets, while Stevenson hit .207, but hit over .300 in three of five sets.
  • Savage tallied 15 kills while Leftridge added 12.  Leftridge also had 15 digs for her second double-double of the day.
  • Prokic hit .583 and had seven kills with no errors while adding four blocks.
  • Sophomore Sarah Riggin had a team-high 18 digs.
  • Dangel registered 19 assists and 12 digs, while junior Emily Castro finished with 14 and added seven digs.

  • Stevenson trailed 2-0 against Muhlenberg last season and rallied for a 3-2 win.  The Mustangs will face the Mules again next weekend at Muhlenerg's Buttermaker Tournament.
  • Leftridge and Savage were named to the All-Tournament Team.  Leftridge totaled 38 kills and 44 digs in four matches, with Savage recording 36 kills and 12 blocks.

  • Stevenson plays its home and MAC Commonwealth opener Wednesday night when it hosts Albright for a 7:00 match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
