No. 8 Frostburg State Downs Mustangs in Season Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Eighth-ranked Frostburg State University racked up 430 yards of offense as it recorded a 34-7 non-conference football victory over Stevenson University at Mustang Stadium Thursday night.  The game was the season opener for both schools.

  • Stevenson forced a fumble on Frostburg's second drive, with Mike Datu knocking it out and Brian Latham recovering at the Mustang 30.  The takeaway gave the Mustangs defense a turnover in its 56th straight game.
  • Jamaal Morant had a five-yard touchdown run with 3:50 left in the first quarter to put Frostburg up 7-0.  One play earlier, Connor Cox had a 92-yard completion to Malik Morris on third down.  The Bobcats were deep in their own territory after a 44-yard Brandon Ribeiro punt pinned them at the 2.

  • The Bobcats scored two touchdowns just over four minutes apart to build a 21-0 lead with 5:07 left in the first half on a Grayson Boyce 3 yard run.
  • Stevenson countered with a 14-play, 75-yard drive capped by a three-yard TD run by senior quarterback Dan Williams to get the Mustangs on the board 21 seconds before halftime.
  • Senior wide receiver Sebastien Vainqueur had two receptions for 47 yards on the scoring drive.

  • Morant scored his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard run with 1:41 left in the third to cap a 12-play, 96-yard drive and extend the Bobcat lead to 28-7.

  • Jeremy Harrison booted field goals of 23 and 22 yards for Frostburg State to close out the scoring.

  • Frostburg outgained Stevenson 430-268 and racked up 176 rushing yards.
  • Stevenson had 120 yards rushing on the night.  The Mustangs rushed for over 100 yards just three times in 2017.
  • The Mustangs won the time of possession battle, holding the ball for nearly 34 minutes.
  • Williams was 17-30 passing for 148 yards, but was sacked four times.
  • Vainqueur, Chaz Lyles and Titus Johnson each had four catches, with Vainqueur finishing with 71 yards.
  • Drexel Mosby had 50 yards on the ground to lead nine Mustang ball carriers.
  • Senior Mike Datu, who missed all but two games last year, had six solo tackles, a sack and three tackles for a loss in addition to his forced fumble.
  • Senior Bill Burton had a team-high eight tackles, while classmates Brian Latham and Ashton Leschke had five apiece.
  • Cox finished 8-15 through the air for 254 yards.

  • Mike Datu forces a fumble and Brian Latham recovers, giving the Mustang defense a takeaway in its 56th straight game.

  • Stevenson is on the road for the next three games starting with next Saturday's (9/8) 7:00 road non-conference game at Bridgewater.
  • The Mustangs return home Saturday, September 29 when they host defending Middle Atlantic Conference champion and 17th-ranked Delaware Valley in a 1:00 kick at Mustang Stadium.
