Mustangs Fall to Third-Ranked Elmira in UCHC Title Game

Box Score

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Caitie Darosa made a career-high 45 saves but top-seeded and third-ranked Elmira netted five goals, including an empty netter, as the third-seeded Mustangs fell, 5-0, in the inaugural United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Championship game Sunday afternoon at Murray Athletic Center.

The Mustangs (15-8-5) finished the season unbeaten in 19 of their last 21 games, including 16 of the last 17.

Elmira (23-3-3) recorded 23 shots in the opening period but only managed one goal, coming on a five-on-three advantage after Darosa stopped the opening 22 shots. After the remaining 53 seconds of the second power play expired to start the second period, the Soaring Eagles scored just 10 seconds later to give themselves a two-goal advantage.

The hosts netted three goals in the middle frame, including a pair by tournament MVP Sarah Hughson who also scored on a delayed penalty call. Hughson finished with four points in the game with a hat trick pus an assist. Elmira took a 4-0 advantage into the second intermission after a goal by Shannon Strawinski with seven seconds remaining.

Stevenson held top-seeded Elmira to just seven shots on net in the third period after a combined 43 shots in the first two periods, including a shot on the empty net goal with 11 seconds left in regulation.

Senior Chelsea Blackburn was named to the All-Tournamant Team and finishes her career with nearly every school record, including 131 points on 83 goals and 48 assists. The game also marks the end of the careers of seniors Sarah Antonelli, Monica Pozuc, Chelsea Ellis, Savannah Sommers, Natalie Rosendahl and Allie Bruns. Together the group led Stevenson to a 68-30-7 record, two conference championship games, the 2015 Codfish Bowl and the program's first-ever conference title.
