Davis Nets Overtime Winner as Mustangs Defeat Nazareth on Senior Day

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey senior Mike Davis netted his fifth career game-winning goal while classmate Doug Rose dished out a pair of assists as the Mustangs clinched a spot in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) playoffs with a 3-2 overtime victory on Senior Day Saturday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

The Mustangs (10-7-7, 8-3-4 UCHC), who have a win in four of their last six games, tied their win total from the inaugural season and clinched a playoff spot for the second straight season. The teams 10 overtime games also ranks tied for second in NCAA Division III history, one behind the record set in 1998.

Sophomore Dominic Brenza recorded his eighth goal of the season to open the scoring just before the midway point of the opening period on assists from Rose and freshman Aaron Murray. It is Brenza's sixth goal on home ice this season while Murray picks up an assist in his thrd consecutive game.

With 4:01 remaining in the first period and just 39 seconds into Stevenson's second power play, Davis netted his eighth power play goal of the season on the second assists of the game from Rose and Murray. It is the first multi-point game for Murray in his career while Rose picks up his third multi-point game of the season and first since November 3.

The Golden Flyers (9-12-2, 6-7-1 UCHC) answered with a power play goal in the second period before tying the game with 9:13 remaining in regulation. Nazareth outshot the Mustangs, 20-9 in the third period.

Just 29 seconds into overtime, Davis scored his third career overtime winner in a Stevenson uniform on an assist from freshman Carl Lyden. After being held without a point for 13-straight game, Davis now has four goals over his last two games, including three on the power play.

The Mustangs were outshot, 40-34 as senior Jacob Caffrey recorded 38 saves. Classmate Jordan Watt finished with a blocked shot.

Stevenson concludes the 207-18 regular season on Friday, February 16 when the Mustangs travel to Neumann for a UCHC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
