Smyth-Hammond Posts Second Straight Shutout in 7-0 Win at King's

PITTSTON, Pa. - Highlighted by the second consecutive shutout by junior Annie Smyth-Hammond and two goal performances by senior Kellen Wittman and freshman Nikki Kendrick, the Stevenson women's ice hockey team cruised to a, 7-0, United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory over King's Saturday afternoon at Revolution Ice Centre.

  • The Mustangs (3-6-1, 2-5-1 UCHC) needed just 3:31 to find the back of the net as junior Jordan Pirrello got the visitors on the board on an assist from classmate Rachel Grewette. The goal was just the second shot on net.
  • Just 4:15 later, Kendrick doubled Stevenson's lead on an assist from junior Allyson Barlow. Kendrick's goal was just the fifth shot on net and came just 20 seconds after her shot was blocked.
  • Wittman got in on the scoring action just 10 seconds into the Mustangs first power play opportunity, netting her team leading ninth goal of the season. Sophomore Casey Storck picked up her first of two assists on the day.
  • After Stevenson scored three goals on its first six shots of the game, the Monarchs (1-11-0, 0-8-0 UCHC) switched goalies and held the visitors to just three shots over the final 7:45.

  • Stevenson started the second period with 1:39 of power play time remaining and needed just 21 seconds as Kendrick scored her fifth power play goal of the season on an assist from Storck.
  • The Mustangs recorded the first seven shots of the period with Smyth-Hammond having to make her first save at the 6:17 mark.
  • Senior Maddy Ricci extended the visitors lead to, 5-0, with 8:18 remaining in the period with an unassisted tally.
  • The Mustangs outshot King's, 20-4, in the period.

  • The Mustangs once again started the period on the power play and Wittman netted her second player advantage goal just one minute in on assists from Kendrick and Pirrello.
  • Midway through the period, sophomore Trinity Barcless netted her first goal of the season to round up the scoring.

  • Stevenson outshot King's, 46-16, marking the second consecutive 40-shot performance.
  • The Mustangs finished 3-for-8 on the power play while going unpenalized for the third time in program history.
  • It is the second consecutive and third shutout for the Mustangs this season. It is the third career shutout for Smyth-Hammond.
  • Wittman posted her second straight multi-goal performance and now has 10 points on seven goals and three assists in four games versus the Monarchs. The senior tied her career-best with 10 goals this season.
  • Kendrick, who has a point in eight of 10 games this season, finished with two goals and one assist. She has seven goals and four assists over her last eight games.
  • Both Wittman and Kendrick have five power play goals this season, three shy of tying the single season program history.
  • It is the second multi-assist game for Storck this season, who leads the team with seven assists.
  • For Pirrello, it is her second multi-point game this season and fourth of her career.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, December 7 when the Mustangs travel to former conference foe, Endicott, for a two-game non-conference series beginning at 6:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs return home in 2019 when the team hosts a non-conference contest versus future conference opponent, Wilkes, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
