Mustangs Drop UCHC, MAC Game at Wilkes

Box Score

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Stevenson men's ice hockey sophomore Carl Lyden scored a goal and dished out an assist but first-year program Wilkes posted its second victory with a, 4-2, United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) win Friday evening at Toyota Sportsplex.

  • After each team put a shot on net, it was the hosts who found the back of the net first as Tyler Barrow looped around at the blue line before beating Riley McVeigh near side.
  • The Mustangs (2-1-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) recorded the next four shots on net, including two on the power play. The visitors went on the man advantage at the 8:09 mark after a tripping call and recorded four shots, including two blocked by Wilkes.
  • With 6:27 remaining in the opening period, the Colonels (2-2-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) had their first power play advantage but it was Stevenson who recorded the first two shots on net. McVeigh came up with a save on the lone shot on the man advantage.
  • Just seven seconds after the Mustangs killed off the penalty, Lyden carried the puck down the ice and beat Barrow over his glove to knot the game at 1-1 with 4:20 remaining in the period.
  • Stevenson kept the offensive pressure, recording the next two shots on net, before Wilkes changed the momentum with the next six shots, including a pair of goals. The Colonels scored just 23 seconds apart to take a 3-1 intermission lead.
  • The Mustangs went on the power play with one second left and will have 1:59 carry over to the second period.

  • Stevenson only recorded one shot on net on the power play opportunity as Brandon Gordon turned away a shot by junior Nick Gray.
  • Just 1:14 after the Mustangs power play expired, the visitors went back on the power play but Gordon saved a pair of shots by junior Christian Ripley.
  • At the 7:31 mark, Wilkes was whistled for a major penalty and game misconduct. Stevenson recorded three straight shots before Ripley was called for a penalty for four-on-four play. Just a 1:25 later, the Mustangs took another penalty to give the Colonels a four-on-three power play for 35 seconds.
  • The Mustangs still had 51 seconds of five-on-three before Wilkes took another penalty to give Stevenson a five-on-three for 21 seconds.
  • The visitors had another power play opportunity with 5:01 remaining in the period but Gordon saved the lone shot by Gray.

  • Wilkes went on the power play just 24 seconds into the third period but McVeigh came up with two saves while the Mustangs defense came up with a pair of blocked shots.
  • But just 28 seconds later, Stevenson went on the penalty kill once again and successfully killed it off behind a pair of saves by McVeigh.
  • With 7:56 remaining, the Mustangs went on the power play after a delay of game call and recorded two shots before being called for a penalty of their own.
  • After four-on-four for six seconds, the Colonels went on the power play but managed to put just one shot on goal.
  • With 1:12 remaining in regulation, McVeigh was pulled in favor of an extra skater and Ripley scored on assists from freshman Ryan Patrick and Lyden with 10 seconds left.
  • But the Colonels scored on an empty net off the face-off to push their lead back to two goals with six seconds left.

  • Wilkes outshot Stevenson, 33-31, while the Mustangs won 48 of the 84 face-offs.
  • Both teams were scoreless on the power play with Stevenson going 0-for-7 and the Colonels, 0-for-4.
  • McVeigh finished with 29 saves.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 10 when the Mustangs travel to King's (Pa.) for a UCHC and MAC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
