Slusarczyk Scores In Mustangs Loss at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. - Stevenson men's ice hockey junior Tyler Slusarczyk netted his first goal of the season but Utica scored seven times as the host Pioneers posted a, 7-1, United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory Friday evening at Adirondack Bank Center.

  • The visiting Mustangs (6-3-0, 3-3-0 UCHC) earned the game's first power play just 2:53 into the contest and fired two shots on net. Junior Christian Ripley tried to feed classmate Nick Gray backdoor but Gray just missed getting his stick on the puck.
  • Stevenson's power play ended early as the visitors were called for a trip on a breakaway by the Pioneers.
  • After four-on-four play for 40 seconds, the Pioneers (5-5-0, 4-2-0 UCHC) had 1:20 on the power play but the hosts did not record a shot on net.
  • Just 17 seconds into Utica's second power play of the game, Brad Becker found the back of the net on a one-timer after a pass across the ice.
  • Thirty-five seconds after four-on-four play, Slusarczyk tied the game at 1-1 with 8:53 remaining as he tucked the puck inside the post after hit bounced off the back boards. Sophomore Houston Wilson was credited with the assist.
  • The Pioneers retook the lead just 1:01 later on a power play goal from Zach Borsoi. Utica took a 3-1 lead with 3:03 remaining as a backhander in close from Jarrod Fitzpatrick found the back of the net.

  • Just 2:20 into the period, Utica extended its lead to three as Josh Haskin scored the first of three goals for the Pioneers in the period.
  • The Mustangs went to the power play at the five-minute mark, but Gianluca Baggetta stopped all three shots on net.
  • Just 40 seconds after the the Pioneers killed off the penalty, Shawn Lynch became the fifth different player to find the back of the net as the hosts took a 5-1 lead.
  • Fitzpatrick netted his second goal of the game, shorthanded, on a breakaway, finishing on the stick side.
  • After the penalty kill, the Mustangs took seven of the next ten shots on net before the visitors were called for a penalty with 2:05 left in the period.

  • Neither team recorded a shot in the opening four minutes of the period before junior Dustyn Moyer made three consecutive saves.
  • The Pioneers outshot Stevenson, 10-7, in the period.
  • The Mustangs went on the power play with 1:56 remaining in regulation but both shots were blocked.

  • Stevenson outshot Utica, 30-27, marking the first loss this season when the Mustangs have outshot their opponent.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-4 on the power play while the Pioneers were 2-for-4. Stevenson is scoreless on the power play over the last three games.
  • It is the second consecutive game for Wilson with an assist.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, December 1 when the Mustangs travel to Nazareth for a UCHC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs are back on home ice on Friday, December 7 when the team hosts Lebanon Valley beginning at 7:00 p.m.
